By analyzing Mara Romero's 1792 Spanish translation of
Madame de Graffigny's Lettres d'une Pruvienne (1747),
this article demonstrates how one woman utilized translation as a
vehicle for expressing her own views in a time when women writers
were still discouraged from publicly circulating their work. A study
of Romero's translator's note, footnotes, and text alterations shows
that she both built on the gender critique embedded in Graffigny's
text and subverted the French author's political message about Spain's
barbarity in the conquest of the Americas. The article also evaluates
Romero's calls for religious renewal to show that not all Enlightenment
thinkers saw religious passion and critical reasoning as opposites. Such
analysis challenges the dichotomy of reason and passion inherent in
much Enlightenment scholarship and argues for the importance of its
deconstruction in situating women in Enlightenment society.

This dissertation investigates the role of El Censor, the essay periodical published in Spain from 1781 to 1787, in challenging government policies and church traditions during the Enlightenment. It argues that the editors and authors of the 167 discursos (essays) criticized social customs and institutions during the last two decades of the antiguo régimen while remaining firmly in their religious faith. The political and historical context of El Censor is presented against the backdrop of the absolutist policies of King Carlos III and the vigilance of the Spanish Inquisition. El Censor's editors and publishers were Luis García Cañuelo and Luis Marcelino Pereira, who at first seemed enigmatic because of their political and religious views. Nevertheless, they and their contributors soon identified themselves as veritable enlightened men, who sought to modernize Spain and the Spanish Roman Catholic Church. In the weekly essays, they published their observations of everyday life and the iniquities that existed in the society of their time. Government authorities banned El Censor twice before shutting it down permanently. Afterwards, the Spanish Inquisition placed twenty-three of the discursos on the syllabus of forbidden books. This dissertation presents eight of the banned discursos with English translations and commentaries. More than two-hundred years after El Censor's prohibition, the discursos continue to speak to twenty-first century readers about the absurdities and injustices of society and power. This dissertation gives credence to the study of the religious Enlightenment; it demonstrates that it was possible to be enlightened and a true Christian. It reveals that El Censor held onto idealist views and moral integrity while facing obstacles from government, church, and angry apologists. In the pages of the discursos, there are recognizable characters like Eusebio the pious hypocrite; Calixto the proud, lazy noble; Candido Zorrilla, the baroque fanatic; and Pedro Camueso y Machuca and el equívoco. This dissertation reveals several unexpected discoveries that challenge long-held notions about the Enlightenment, the Roman Catholic Church, and Spain.

Ramón de Salas, a teacher of law at the University of Salamanca in Spain, wrote his Apuntaciones al Genovesi in the second half of the 1780s. It was an exhaustive analysis of the economic and political thought contained in Genovesi's Lezioni di commercio (1765–1767). Although never published, the work enjoyed enormous success due to its length, the unquestionable intellectual stature of its author (Salas was destined to play a leading role in Spanish liberalism) and the value added by Salas's 'comments': his Apuntaciones amounted to a detailed critique of the economic thought contained in Genovesi's Lezioni. This article examines Salas's economic thought and his critical engagement with the work of Genovesi.
This article presents a systematic review of the economic journalism of the Spanish Enlightenment between 1758 and 1792. In addition to identifying this type of journalism, it aims at discovering its sources, determining its main phases around two distinct periods (1758-1771 and 1776-1792), and locating its contents within the doctrinal trends of its time. In the shadow of the journalistic initiatives of this period, a journalism of a plural doctrinal inspiration emerged. It was based on the influence of French journalistic sources. Its culmination was reached in 1792, with the beginning of the publication of El Correo Mercantil. This article also underlines the central role of the publicists of the Madrid Economic Society and the Board of Trade. They were responsible of the improvements experienced in that period by an economic journalism that instigated the creation of a new «public» and gradually approached the journalism developed in other nearby nations.

This paper analyzes the specific schedule of translation conducted by the Abreu family in the early Hispanic Enlightenment. The program may seem like an insignificant element in the face of the flood of translations in that context. But what this text argues is that, on the contrary, it was very new in terms of political languages and no less indicative of the survival in Hispanic culture, despite that flood, of selective capacities in the practice of translation. New, because it constituted the most ambitious attempt so far rehearsed to explore the possibility of receiving the discourse that, since the middle of the previous century, had been presenting the interest of the states as the effective sovereign of the international order. And it was also indicative of the validity of selective capacities in the deployment of translation because the root that infused the program was precisely the detection of a variant of that political rhetoric that, while enabling the monarchy to try to reverse its subsidiary position in the Utrecht order, it was consistent with its Catholic moral tradition ; El artículo analiza el específico programa de traducción conducido por la familia Abreu en la temprana Ilustración hispana.
