The Global War on Terrorism has increased the demands placed on military members. The increased rate of deployments, coupled with the reduction in resources, has military leaders concerned that these changing demands will cause undue strain, adversely affecting the military member's quality of life. This research tests the effects of active duty military deployments on homestation job stressors and burnout. Pre- and post- deployment surveys were administered to test for any significant changes that resulted from a deployment. A group of non-deploying members was also measured during the same time frame to serve as the control group. Results showed that deployments resulted in increased levels of two facets of job satisfaction and decreased levels of role conflict, emotional exhaustion, and burnout. The only significant change noted by the control group was a decrease in the level of organizational commitment. Therefore, despite the fact that military deployments can be extremely stressful themselves, they do offer some beneficial effects to military members upon return to their homestation environment. On the other hand, those who do not get a "break" from the everyday work environment either stay the same or show less desirable levels of job stress and burnout.

Work in out-of-school learning programs can be stressful, and job stress may have cascading effects for the children and youth that attend. Fortunately, workplace supports can help decrease this stress. In this study, we aimed to understand how youth workers' personal and work-related demands as well as supports predict on-the-job stress. We used multilevel modeling to investigate the demands and supports of a sample of 111 youth workers nested in 25 programs. Results suggested that job stress systematically varies at the program level. We found that stress at home and a negative staffing climate is associated with higher stress and the presence of supervisor support is associated with lower staff stress. Supervisor support, in particular, likely can play a key role in decreasing youth worker stress. We discuss implications for training supervisors and structuring programs to support staff and to ultimately foster more positive out-of-school program experiences for the children and youth that attend.

The stress is a product of inequality of the traditional leisure-consumption model in the labor market. So, this research estimates a Job Stress Index (JSI) using the fuzzy sets measurement method with the aim of identifying the stress levels faced by the employed population and its possible determinants. Once the JSI is estimated, we analyzed the profile of job stress using a probit ordered multinomial model from a set of sociodemographic and labor attributes. The results suggest the job stress is not correlated with the employment rates. Likewise, the profile of working more than 48 hours a week, being a man, without a labor contract, divorced, changing of job, among other factors are associated with a high probability of being with job stress at least 17.19%. The JSI reconciles the importance of implementing occupational health programs in order to improve the work environment, and theoretical consistency according to the suggested from the psychology, becoming a novel contribution from the economic sciences.

Neurocognitive and Physiological Factors During High-Tempo Operations features world-renowned scientists conducting groundbreaking research into the basic mechanisms of stress effects on the human body and psyche, as well as introducing novel pharmaceutics and equipment that can rescue or improve maximal performance during stress. Its focus is on the military model as an exemplar for high-stress environments, the best for understanding human performance under stress, both in the short-term as well as in the long-term. The unprecedented demands on the modern soldier include constantly shifting enemy threat levels and tactics, ambiguous loyalties, rapidly evolving weaponry, and the need to amass, comprehend, retain, and act upon large datasets of information. During high-tempo operations, soldiers must maintain superior cognitive and physical skill levels throughout extended periods of little to no sleep. Furthermore, although a soldier fresh from training may perform at peak skill, the effects of cognitive and physical strain and sleeplessness during deployment can impair his or her ability to transfer instructional knowledge to complex real-life situations. It is necessary to understand how intense workloads, both mental and physical, combine with total sleep deprivation to alter soldier situation awareness, decision-making, and physical abilities. The resulting knowledge can be used to design rapid, deployable fitness-for-duty measures, alter training protocols, and assess training efficacy in order to enable decision-makers to act at peak ability during high operations tempo. In addition, dual-use applications of resulting knowledge and technology extend well into the civilian sector, to law-enforcement officers, healthcare professionals, and emergency responders. In work stress research, consistent relationships between job characteristics and strain have not been established across methods for assessing job characteristics. By examining the methods used to assess job characteristics in work stress research, I argue that this is because different methods are assessing interrelated, yet distinct, facets of job characteristics: latent, perceived and enacted facets. The article discusses the implications for work stress research of differentiating these facets of job characteristics.

Applied research indicates strong connections between dimensions of the work place, stress and job satisfaction. Yet, there is an absence of theory to provide conceptual understanding of these relationships. In 1999, Sparks and Cooper advocated using job‐specific models of stress as a way of developing a better understanding of the relationships. The current study adopted this recommendation and investigated a specific job context, specifically, naval officer trainees undergoing their sea training. The results indicate that a general model of stress is unhelpful in identifying the predictors of stress and job satisfaction in specific job contexts. Instead, the authors recommend identifying salient workplace dimensions rather than a broad‐brush approach when seeking workplace associations with stress.

Background: Nowadays, in most countries of the world, especially in industrial societies and the societies in which the social and economical chaos have disrupted the normal life, social sources of stress have got common more than ever, in a way that stress is considered as the black plague in the current era. The aim of this study is to assess Job stress and related factors in nurses in Ilam. Methods: This study is of the descriptive-analytical kind, which was performed in a temporary way. The sample was consisted of all nurses working in governmental hospitals of Ilam city. Sampling was performed through consensus, and the Cooper's job stress questionnaire was used for collecting data. SPSS software and one-way Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA) test were used to analyze the data. Results: 56 percents of research units have experienced severe stress. Using the ANOVA test, a significant relationship was observed between the average years of employment and the kind of the hospital and the average level of stress (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our results show that in the begging years of employment and in nurses with low record of employment stress is severe, and after ten years of employment stress level declines. Conflict with other nurses and physicians, and also lacking enough skill for performing nursing services, are the main causes of prevalence of stress among nurses in governmental hospitals in Ilam.
