The University of Maryland Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (M-CERSI), in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), conducted research and outreach to solicit input from the public, including medical specialists, to better understand the use of certain bulk drug substances nominated for use in compounding by outsourcing facilities under section 503B of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act). In particular, we were interested in how drugs compounded with these bulk drug substances were used historically, and how they are currently used in clinical practice. The research will assist the FDA in its development of a list of bulk drug substances that outsourcing facilities can use in compounding under section 503B of the Act. Research for each bulk drug substance included a systematic literature review, interviews with medical experts and a survey of healthcare practitioners. The values of critical micelle concentration (CMC), maximum surface excess concentration (Гmax) and minimum area per molecule (Amin) of the surfactant at air-liquid interface have been evaluated. Thermodynamic parameters of micellization as well as adsorption have also been evaluated. The micellization process is exothermic while adsorption is endothermic in nature.

High sodium intake has been linked with problems of hypertension and in Brazil, it still has above that recommended by the World Health Organization. Meat products contribute 20–30% of sodium intake in the diet, indicating the necessity of reducing the amount of sodium added. The aim of this study was to reduce the sodium content in Toscana sausages by partial replacement of sodium chloride with PuraQ Arome NA4 substitute, and to evaluate the effect on physico-chemical and microbiological parameters and sensory acceptability. Three formulations – one control (T1), and one with 20% (T2) and another with 30% (T3) sodium reduction compared with the control – were produced. For comparative purposes, the physico-chemical, microbiological and sensory parameters were determined. In the proposed formulations with 20% and 30% reduction, the sodium contents were 857.3 mg 100 g-1 (T2) and 790.3 mg 100 g-1 (T3), compared with 926.7 mg 100 g-1 in T1. The produced samples were in accordance with the physico-chemical (moisture, lipid, protein and calcium) and microbiological (Salmonella, coagulase-positive Staphylococcus, and sulphite-reducing Clostridium and Coliforms at 45°C) parameters stipulated by Brazilian law. The analysis of lightness and hue indicated that the sample T3 had a more intense red colour, while T1 had a less intense red colour. In the shear force evaluation, no difference was observed between the samples. The sample T2 was the most preferred in the ordering of preference test; however, in the hedonic scale, there was no difference between the means of sensory values for roast colour, aroma, texture, flavour and overall impression, indicating that all samples had adequate sensory acceptance. Acceptability levels were greater than 74.6% for all attributes evaluated in T1, T2 and T3.

Conventional mineral salts medium (MSM) had been used for many years. A modification of the concentration of sodium chloride was attempted in this work to observe the effect or otherwise on microbial activities in reaction tubes. This study was undertaken to assess the biodegradation potentials of Alcaligenes species on heptane. Results showed the hydrocarbon degrading ability of Alcaligenes sp. under varying concentrations of sodium chloride salt for a period of sixteen (16) days at two to four days interval. Due to its rapid rate of multiplication, a steady increase in bacterial growth was observed during the experiment. Alcaligenes sp. showed appreciable growth on heptane with a reading of 6.5x108cfu/ml on Day 16. Also, the regeneration rate of Alcaligenes sp. was found to be rapid on heptane in the presence of 4M concentration of NaCl with a reading of 1.18x109cfu/ ml on Day 16. This study shows that increased sodium chloride concentration aids the utilization of heptane by Alcaligenes sp. Hence, Alcaligenes sp. is a promising isolate that can be used for the bioremediation of hydrocarbon contaminated sites in saline environment.

Salt or sodium chloride (NaCl) is an additive to give food a salty taste. The use of salt in everyday life is difficult to avoid. Salt has both good and bad effects on the body. The electrolyte content of salt can help launch metabolism in the body, whereas if the body contains too much salt it will cause heart attacks and hypertension. The dose of salt consumption that has been set by the government is 5g/day. This study was conducted to examine the effect of consuming excessive sodium chloride (NaCl) on the ability to smell and to what extent it damages cells in the hippocampus of mice (Mus musculus). The method of this study was CRD (completely randomized design) with 6 replications, 1 group control and 3 repetitions induced by sodium chloride (NaCl) is 260mg/gBB (P1), 520mg/gBB (P2), and 780mg/gBB (P3). The parameters of this study are neurosensory coordination in the form of olfactory response of mice (Mus musculus) to ammonia and cell disruption in the hippocampus (DG & CA) which were observed by histological preparations of Hematoxylin eosin (HE) staining. The results of this study indicate the presence of olfactory disorders in mice (Mus musculus) and cell death in the hippocampus also increased due to excessive sodium chloride (NaCl) induction. The more salt is consumed in daily life, it will disrupt the cells in the hippocampus.

Thermal decomposition of different samples containing a mixture of plastics (polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and nylon) combined with NaCl and metal oxides (Fe2O3, CuO) was studied under an air atmosphere at 850 °C using a reactor, followed by analysis of the evolved products. Combustion runs were performed to study how the presence of such compounds influences the production of pollutants. Here, we report the analyses of the emissions of the main gases, as well as volatiles and semivolatiles, including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated benzenes and phenols, and polybrominated phenols. Results show that the production of chlorinated pollutants did not increase in the presence of NaCl, but the presence of other metals during the decomposition led to the production of a great amount of pollutants. In this regard, the emission of chlorinated phenols increased from 110 to ca. 250 mg/kg when the sample included a small quantity of a transition metal oxide. Additionally, the presence of an inhibitor—thiourea (TUA)—was tested.
