MICROFINANCE has emerged as an instrument poverty alleviation by way of providing credit and other financial services to the poor. It has been promoted by Jinkin self help groups (SHGs) of the poor with banks, either directly o through non" government organisations (NGOs). It is estimated that India has nearly 400 million people living below the poverty line. Approximately 75 million households need micro-finance, of which nearly 60 million households are in rural areas and 15 million are urban slum dwellers.

Self help groups make use of the microcredit system for the cause of poverty eradication by eliminating the need for collateral thus making a large section of society creditworthy. This system after it became a huge success in Bangladesh as Bangladesh Grameen Bank was adopted in many regions in order to recreate its success. In India, self-help groups were used to bring out some improvement in women"s condition. Thus women empowerment was aimed through starting of many self-help groups in India. Empowerment is imparting power to women to take decisions in their own matters and being in control of their own life. Empowerment occurs at cognitive, political, economic and physical aspects. The empowerment of women in all walks of life would happen only by the economic independence of women. Which increase their dignity and self-worth. The self-help groups have tried to raise the women"s role to that of the contributor to family income in this paper the whether self-help groups were successful in their venture in light if very few examples are analyzed along with its what are the drawbacks that limit the self-help groups in achieving its maximum potential are observed.

Poor people continue to face the problem of banking and financial services. It is estimated that 120 million households are facing financial exclusion. In this direction microfinance has played an important role in filling this gap by providing financial services with the help of various lending models among which SHGs are one of them. SHGs are formed by rural people with the objective of improving their livelihoods through collective savings and investments in income-generating activities. The objective of the study is to study the challenges faced by Self Help Groups related to skill level of members. Self Help Groups can act as main vehicle for upliftment of women and families located in rural and urban area of India. SHGs have tremendous potential to contribute in socioeconomic development of India. Government is taking positive steps for SHG development with NGOs but still SHGs are facing problems in four major areas like  financial Support, technical support, marketing of SHG output and training of members.Â

In recent years the self-help group movement has grown by leaps and bounds. The relationships between these groups and professional helpers has been a tenuous one. Although now there is a greater receptivity toward professionals by these groups, there is still considerable skepticism about their respective roles. This article suggests innovative solutions for mutual benefits for these groups and the professionals. Through a derivative paradigm the role of the professional helper within self-help groups is presented.
