Presents an overview of immigrant communities in Portugal, a country with a long tradition of emigration that has now become an entry point into the European Union (EU) & a net importer of labor. The integration process into Portuguese society is examined, with particular reference to the labor market. The question of racist attitudes & tolerance to foreigners is discussed, & an assessment made of immigration legislation, including asylum laws. It is argued that as Portugal's immigrant policy has been "Europeanized" (in line with EU arrangements), it has posed awkward questions concerning the country's handling of its immigrant communities. 2 Tables, 60 References.
