The growing importance of religious conservatives in the Republican Party is one of the most interesting aspects of evolving party coalitions in the US. However, their identification has proved to be difficult because of different operational definitions of religious conservatives. Here, an alternative operational definition is posited, identifying conservative Republicans for whom religion is an important part of their lives. This definition is then used to estimate the number of religious conservatives in the mass electorate & ascertain their political distinctiveness compared to other Republicans. While the definition used here is a broad one, it is demonstrated that, in terms of voting behavior & issue preferences, a religious conservative Republican is qualitatively distinct from a secular conservative Republican. 4 Tables, 34 References. The recent upsurge of electoral support for Sinn Fein & the apparent leftward turn by this movement has reawoken interest in the ideology of Irish republicanism. Here, a discourse analysis approach to this ideology is developed that stresses the contradictory interpellations of nationalism, catholicism, socialism, & republicanism operating on the Irish Republican Army members. The situation in the 1930s is compared with that of the 1970s, using data from a broader oral history of Belfast in the 1930s & contemporary written sources. Focus is on Belfast republicanism, partly to offset the previous concentration on southern Ireland, & also because Belfast represents the epicenter of the republican movement & the mainspring of its leftward turn. MCCLOSKY'S CLASSIC STUDY OF PARTY LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS IS REPLICATED AND EXTENDED USING 1980 DATA ON PARTY ELITES, PARTY FOLLOWERS, AND THE MASS PUBLIC. DRAMATIC INTERPARTY DIFFERENCES EMERGE IN TERMS OF LIBERALISM-CONSERVATISM AND VIEWS ON PUBLIC POLICY ISSUES. AS IN THE MCCLOSKY STUDY, PARTY ELITES TEND TO TAKE RELATIVELY EXTREME ISSUE POSITIONS, WHILE THE MASS PUBLIC CONTINUES TO OCCUPY A CENTRIST POSITION.
