In psychology and medicine, expressions such as that of the Vis medicatrix naturae of yesterday, and the regulation and autoregulation of today, suggest that the functional norms of the Other are inherent to their structure. The same expressions are employed in social sciences to signify the concept of an omnipresence of norms or rules. This concept is found paradoxically to have defenders among those who support the principle of state intervention in economic life, as well as among those who argue the opposite position. The history of ideas can help to resolve this apparent paradox, notably in clarifying that the relative implications of conceptual extension of regulation can be subject to different usages. This implies that actors in recurrent controversies on the understanding of the concept of social regulation understand them better today than in the past. Adapted from the source document.
