The demise of communism is discussed in relation to postmodernity, arguing that communism attracts, politicizes, & turns against itself the popular political & social dissension that postmodern culture depoliticizes & absorbs. Postmodern culture is able to do this because it transforms expressions of political disaffection into problems & issues of personal character, while in communist societies, expressions of political revolt are targeted toward the state, creating an unresolvable tension between the people & the state. It is concluded that communism failed because of its inability to cope with its discontents. W. Howard
