This essay argues that the American regionalist writer Willa Cather was deeply influenced by Dutch Golden Age painters in the compositional strategies of her short stories. Looking at Cather's 'Coming, Aphrodite!' (1920), the essay examines the geometric composition of the work, the orthogonal planes used throughout it, and the symbolism of the story to argue that it offers a self-conscious visual experience. The essay makes the case that Cather's transcultural and trans-generic experimentation lifts her literary reputation from the 'local colour' or regionalist demarcation and sets her firmly among her modernist peers.

This article highlights and examines two types of portrait genre: portrait with a pet and portrait of a pet with reference to the Russian painting of the eighteenth — early twentieth centuries. So far, works of this kind have not been considered as specific iconographic groups, the ways of their development have not been traced, and their undoubted connection and mutual influence has not been noted. Meanwhile, it seems to be an important case for studying the animalistic genre. The article analyzes the image of a pet, its interpretations, and characteristics in portrait and animalistic painting. The purpose of this article is to trace the evolution of the depiction of pets. This article reflects the initial stage of research on this topic and to a considerable extent, only indicates some problems for further study. Methodologically, the author mostly employs systematic, iconographic, formal, and stylistic analyses of works of Russian painting from museum collections. As a result, the researcher determines the main characteristics of the portrait with a pet and portrait of a pet. The article demonstrates that in the nineteenth — early twentieth centuries, from a more static and conditional "touching" elements in the portrait with models, the images of animals become real characters endowed with certain characteristics involved in emotional interaction with their owner. Similarly, the same was observed in the animalistic portrait of a pet: from a ceremonial picture, iconographically close to secular portraits, where the main goal is to capture the appearance of a pet, in the late nineteenth — early twentieth centuries, there appeared more empathy and psychologism in the interpretation of the image of a pet. It is noteworthy that by the early twentieth century, portraits with pets were created more and more often, and the "distance" between the person and the animal was significantly reduced. At the same time, the portrait of the pet itself was in less demand and transformed into the animalistic genre as it is.

This study focuses on the chronology of local cultural themes that were selected from Malaysian portrait paintings. All the artworks were chosen from the permanent Kuala Lumpur National Art Gallery collection. The process was supported with visits and observations, where the process of record was identified and followed with the categorization of themes. All the artworks shared individual, economic, social, and family themes, which became the priorities of the painters. The whole theme from this classification represented the cultural identity and became the most important theme for local painters in this country after it achieved independence.

In this unit we will examine a range of Napoleonic imagery by David, Gros and a number of other artists, beginning with comparatively simple single-figure portraits and moving on to elaborate narrative compositions such as Jaffa and Eylau. In so doing, we will have three main aims: to develop your skills of visual analysis, to examine the relationship between art and politics and to introduce you to some of the complex issues involved in interpreting works of art.

Universal access and generous coverage are important goals of the Dutch long-term care (LTC) system. It is a legal requirement that everyone eligible for LTC should be able to receive it. Institutional care (IC) made up for 90% of Dutch LTC spending. To investigate whether access to IC is as equitable as the Dutch government aspires, we explored practice variation in entitlements to IC across Dutch regions. We used a unique dataset that included all individual applications for Dutch LTC in January 2010–December 2013 (N = 3,373,358). This dataset enabled an accurate identification of the need for care. We examined the local variation in the probability of being granted long-term IC and in the intensity of the care granted given that individuals have applied for LTC. We also investigated whether the variation observed was related to differences in the local availability of care facilities. Although our analyses indicated the presence of some practice variation, its magnitude was very small by national and international standards (up to 3%). Only a minor part of the practice variation could be accounted for by local supply differences in care facilities. Overall, we conclude that, unlike many other developed countries, the Dutch system ensured equitable access to long-term IC.

[Context] The large astrometric and photometric survey performed by the Gaia mission allows for a panoptic view of the Galactic disc and its stellar cluster population. Hundreds of stellar clusters were only discovered after the latest Gaia data release (DR2) and have yet to be characterised. ; [Aims] Here we make use of the deep and homogeneous Gaia photometry down to G = 18 to estimate the distance, age, and interstellar reddening for about 2000 stellar clusters identified with Gaia DR2 astrometry. We use these objects to study the structure and evolution of the Galactic disc. ; [Methods] We relied on a set of objects with well-determined parameters in the literature to train an artificial neural network to estimate parameters from the Gaia photometry of cluster members and their mean parallax. ; [Results] We obtain reliable parameters for 1867 clusters. Our catalogue confirms the relative lack of old stellar clusters in the inner disc (with a few notable exceptions). We also quantify and discuss the variation of scale height with cluster age, and we detect the Galactic warp in the distribution of old clusters. ; [Conclusions] This work results in a large and homogeneous cluster catalogue, allowing one to trace the structure of the disc out to distances of ∼4 kpc. However, the present sample is still unable to trace the outer spiral arm of the Milky Way, which indicates that the outer disc cluster census might still be incomplete. ; We thank the referee for useful suggestions that helped clarify this paper.
