WITHIN TWO YEARS OF THE ASIAN FINANCIAL CRISIS, HOWEVER, THE POLICIES OF BOTH MAJOR AUSTRALIAN POLITICAL PARTIES SHOWED QUIET SIGNS OF BELATED CHANGE. THE EAST TIMORESE INDEPENDENCE DEBACLE FURTHER TESTED THE AUSTRALIAN COMMITMENT TO WARM RELATIONS WITH INDONESIA.
