« Incertitude » est l'un des mots qui, par bien des aspects, permettent de qualifier l'historiographie actuelle. Le renouvellement radical de la construction de leurs objets à partir des années 1980 a conduit les historiens à réfléchir à des temporalités alors nouvelles pour eux, dominées par l'incertain et l'imprévisible. Ils ont par ailleurs été amenés à accorder une place prédominante à l'incertitude en tant que composante majeure du savoir historique, ce qui les a incités à modifier non seulement la construction de leurs objets mais leurs objets eux-mêmes.

International audience ; 1 Sources romaines, traditions gallicanes : historiographies catholiques et historiographies laïques du catholicisme français d'Ancien Régime Le titre de cette communication appelle quelques précisions : il n'est pas courant en France de parler d'historiographies laïques ou catholiques. Le second qualificatif peut même être péjoratif : parler d'un « historien catholique » ou d'une « historiographie catholique » éveille immédiatement en France le soupçon de manque d'objectivité et de partialité. Robert Descimon résume bien cette hostilité d'une grande partie de la tradition historiographique laïque française en affirmant dans une introduction à une traduction française d'articles de Wolfgang Reinhard : « Partout en Europe, l'apologétique est un des buts cachés d'écriture des historiens chrétiens » 1. De façon significative, cette accusation très polémique n'a suscité aucune réaction. Les historiens catholiques français ont en effet une forte réticence à se définir comme tels, avec quelques rares exceptions, comme Jean Delumeau. Le clergé français a bien compté de grands historiens au XXe siècle, d'Yves Congar à Michel de Certeau, et il continue aujourd'hui d'honorer cette grande tradition, mais la diversité même de ces historiens interdit de les regrouper en un courant historiographique cohérent. Leur rapport aux sources romaines est d'ailleurs le plus souvent aussi distant que pour la grande majorité des historiens laïcs. Pas plus que l'historiographie « catholique », l'historiographie laïque ne recoupe un champ homogène et épistémologiquement défini : si le terme de laïc veut dire la neutralité confessionnelle, il ne s'agit pas d'une spécificité puisque la très grande majorité des historiens français se refuse à se revendiquer explicitement d'une histoire confessionnelle.
