AbstractThis paper searches early Greek texts (Homer, Herakleitos, Parmenides, Plato) for the genesis of the idea of the individual mind or soul as a unitary site of consciousness, and explores the relation of this genesis to the first monetisation in history. Money simultaneously promotes the isolated autonomy of the individual and provides a model (the unification of diversity by semi-abstract substance) that shapes both the unity of individual consciousness and the presocratic conception of the cosmos as constituted by a single semi-abstract substance. The argument confirms and develops the importance accorded by Alfred Sohn-Rethel to the 'real abstraction' of commodity-exchange in the origins of Greek philosophy.

"Monetisation and Commercialisation in the Baltic Sea, 1050-1450 explores the varied uses of silver and gold in the Baltic Sea zone during the medieval period. Ten original contributions examine coins and currencies, trade, economy, and power, taking care to avoid an out-of-date approach to economic history which assumes a progression from 'primitive' forms to 'developed' structures. Combining a variety of methodological approaches, and drawing on written sources, archaeological and numismatic evidence, and anthropological perspectives, the book considers the various ways in which silver and gold were used as monetary currency, fiscal instruments of power, and gifts in the High and Late Medieval societies of the Baltic Sea. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval European history, as well as those interested in economic history, and the history of trade and commerce"--

The relative impacts of the monetised and non‐monetised deficit on
output and inflation in the United States are assessed using annual data
for the 1923‐1982 period. With Federal Reserve purchases of government
debt serving as a measure of monetisation, the results of Granger
causality tests suggest that for the period 1923‐1960 neither deficit
growth nor monetisation affected real GNP growth, nominal GNP growth or
inflation. For the period 1961‐1982, monetisation is found to have
fuelled inflation with no effect on real GNP. Non‐monetised deficits
provided a negative short‐run impact on the rate of inflation over this
latter period.

Privatisation, a buzzword of the 20th century, has varied approaches; it could be a broad approach of liberalisation to introduce market forces without any change of ownership, termed as 'partial privatisation'. In narrow terms, it refers to denationalisation or divestiture and change of ownership by sale to private individuals. Public sector in India has grown over the years and operational autonomy has been granted. Disinvestment of government shareholding, has been an annual budgetary exercise; it includes strategic sale. Of late, various disinvestment approaches that are followed include share buyback, cross shareholding offer for sale, follow-on public offer, block deal exchange trade fund. The realisation of disinvestment has been about 56% of the total, and new options have to be explored. Asset monetisation, an approach to encash assets with an objective to raise resources to finance new projects, is planned with an objective to develop infrastructure by involving private sector by following different forms of the publicÐprivate partnership approach. National Monetisation Policy (NMP) has been announced by the government of India to raise ₹600,000 crore over the period of next four years, that is, from 2022 to 25, to cover up the infrastructure gap. As such, monetisation of assetsÑcore as well as non-coreÑwould be a great step in achieving the objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat [self-reliant India], and India to become $5 trillion economy by 2024. Privatisation, liberalisation and asset monetisation appear to be a simple theoretical exercise; it would require planning for newer approaches to attract private funds and also to have political will.

This paper assesses the prospects and challenges facing the Republic of Cyprus in developing the discovery of a significant offshore gas field by Noble Energy in December 2011. This discovery came close on the heels of the major discoveries in adjacent offshore Israel, further astounding the international upstream exploration and production community who had largely overlooked the prospectivity of this area. For the Republic of Cyprus, whose economy is dominated by tourism and the service sector and overshadowed by Eurozone economic malaise, this discovery offers lower domestic energy costs and substantial export revenues. However, as is often the case with unexpected fortune, decisions on how best to develop such a resource for the benefit of a nation with a history of inter-ethnic tensions are not straightforward and further complicated by Cyprus' geographic and geopolitical setting. Anastasios Giamouridis describes the status of the Aphrodite field and juxtaposes the logical process of progressively defining options for the development of the field and the export strategy for gas produced in excess of Cyprus' modest current and future consumption needs with the rising expectations, not just of the Cypriot government but also neighbouring countries with either aspirations to share in this source of hydrocarbon wealth or openly disputing Cyprus' sovereign hydrocarbon ownership rights. Anastasios introduces the pros and cons of future unitisation and joint development with Israel and examines the institutional capability of the Cypriot government to guide the monetisation of the resource at a time when it is also focused on Cyprus's EU Presidency in the second half of 2012.
