Claims that the meaning of the military-industrial complex theory, originally coined by US President Dwight D. Eisenhower, has been misinterpreted until recent years. It is proposed that during the 1960s, the phrase signified the threat of going to war, &, during the Vietnam era, it referenced the interests that kept profiting from the war. Today, however, it is suggested that Eisenhower's original meaning has been restored as the military budget has grown rapidly, & the military career path has been distorted by the alliance of uniformed military personnel with government contractors.
