The reorientation of the Bundeswehr towards an operations Army also required a reform of the logistics in the recent past. While it was assumed in the days of the East-West conflict that there could be a war of defence on the own territory, logistics must now be capable of supporting both the routine-type basic operation at home and the worldwide missions all over the globe. This challenge was and is to be met by adhering to the guidelines and stipulations regarding an economical application of the budgetary funds and a steady oplimization within the scope of the transformation of the Bundeswehr. Ground operations are increasingly determined by highly complex mission scenarios. This requiresa high degree of flexibility and quickness in response by the maintenance forces for land systems. High-tech products, standard commercial items, and the type variety of materiel and equipment specifically challenge the maintenance forces in the area of operations and necessitate excessive staff costs. The Army Land Systems Maintenance School and School of Engineering is therefore studying to what extent maintenance personnel of the future can be purposefully and efficiently supported by a tele-maintenance system. The goal is to provide by way of tele-maintenance the technically experienced and broadly trained maintenance personnel on operations wiih detailed, profound system knowledge of all land systems of the Bundeswehr by means of "know-how transfer" in a way that effective and efficient maintenance can be carried out in all operational conditions. Logistics? In the civilian field sometimes reduced to timely availability of material means much more to the Bundeswehr: "The logistic support of the armed forces is provided in a system of command and control, forces, resources and procedures of the joint and operational logistics, the territorial military administration, the armament area and by leaning on the services of the trade and industry as well as multinational agencies". (Partial Concept of Logistics of the Bundeswehr of 15 Nov 2001). According to that, logistics consist of a series of tasks and business processes. Only if one little wheel engages with the other one it will ultimately be possible to successfully achieve what the logicians have in mind: a perfect service support in all fields. The Bundeswehr Logistics Office in Sankt Augustin forms and moves some of these "little wheels" in the Logistics System of the Bundeswehr. The following article is to describe what is meant by that.
