The Confederate Graves Survey Archive of the Texas Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans consists of surveys of cemetaries throughout Texas, and portions of Oklahoma and New Mexico. The surveys document the interment of Confederate States of America military veterans. United States of America (Union) veterans, as well as able-bodied men at the time of the Civil War, are also documented. 13 boxes entitled "Grave Surveys" contain grave surveys listed county-by-county, 3 boxes of "Unit Files" list surveyed individuals by their military unit. Finally, 17 boxes contain "Veteran Files" that document each veteran by name in "last name, first name, middle initial" format. Bidal Aguero was born on July 23, 1949, and attended Texas Technological College (later Texas Tech University) in the fall of 1967. While there, he became active a Mexican American student organization called Los Tertullianos, becoming vice-president in 1970 and president in 1971. Los Tertullianos organized gatherings and seminars to encourage Mexican American students to be more politically active. Aguero graduated from Texas Tech in December 1972 with a B.A. in music education and after working for Learn-Education Talent Search for seven months, he helped found COMA (Commerciantes Organizacion Mexicano Americano), the Mexican-American Chamber of Commerce, in 1972. ; He joined La Raza Unida Party, ran for local offices such as county commissioner, and participated in organizing protests for injustices done against Mexican Americans. Aguero was one of those who filed a lawsuit against the Lubbock Independent School District to change its method of electing school trustees. Aguero has worked in several local social service organizations such as Defensa, Inc., Chicanos Unidos-Campensions, and Llano Estacado Farmworkers of Tejas and government groups such as the South Plains Association of Governments, the State of Texas, and the City of Lubbock. Aguero is currently publisher of one of the two weekly Spanish newspapers in Lubbock, El Editor. ; Aguero has worked in several local social service organizations such as Defensa, Inc., Chicanos Unidos-Campensions, and Llano Estacado Farmworkers of Tejas and government groups such as the South Plains Association of Governments, the State of Texas, and the City of Lubbock. Some general data on Mexican Amer's in Tex are followed by a study of electoral & other pol'al participation of diff ethnic groups in Tex, their pol'al party identification, issue orientation, & pol'al efficacy & alienation. The sample consisted of 797 Anglos, 419 Negroes, & 375 Mexican Amer's; data were collected by Merrill Res of Dallas, Tex, in 1969. It is found that the pol'al participation of Mexican Amer's is weak on all levels. This can be explained through any of 4 distinct lines of interpretations as summarized by Tomas Slmaguer, "Toward the Study of Chicano Colonialism," Aztlan, 1971, 2, Spr, 7-22: (1) deficiencies of the group; (2) racism & discrimination; (3) class domination; & (4) internal colonialism. It is indicated that there is indeed an unrealized potential for increasing the pol'al power of Mexican Amer's. But the path to the attainment of that power is not clear. A new pol'al party was formed in 1970, La Raza Unida. But the elections in 1972 for state office illustrate the possibilities & pitfalls of the minor party strategy: it may shrink the prospects for a successful liberal coalition & increase the likelihood of continued conservative control of the state. At this stage, it is not certain which alternative Mexican Amer's will or should pursue. Improved opportunities for a larger role for Mexican Amer's in Tex pol are there. 8 Tables. M. Maxfield.

Selected historical materials are used in testing the utility of a general theory on the development of the subordinate status of the Mexican Amer's in Tex put forth by Donald L. Noel (see SA 1019/D9472). Noel considers the effects of competition to depend upon (1) the number & signif of the objects or resources sought by the competing groups; (2) the terms of rules regulating the competition; & (3) the relative adaptive capacities of the groups involved. A discussion of the "arena of competition," ethnocentrism & the conflict between Spain & the US, & the emergence of the stratification system in Tex illustrates the subordination of Mexican Amer's in Tex & confirms the usefulness of Noel's theory. The theory emerged as most useful in explaining (1) the relative adaptability of those of Spanish & English descent within the borderland, & (2) the failure of a strong system of regulative values to emerge within Tex during the period of Anglo Amer colonization. Noel's theory draws explicit attention to the role of diff'ial adaptive capacities but simultaneously prevents the analyst from ignoring the necessary presence of additional factors (ie, power & ethnocentrism) & the multi-faceted character of competition as well.
