<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Training in addiction medicine and addiction psychology is essential to ensure the quality of treatment for patients with substance use disorders. Some earlier research has shown varying training between countries, but no comprehensive study of addiction training across Europe has been performed. The present study by the European Federation for Addiction Societies (EUFAS) aimed to fill this gap. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A Delphi process was used to develop a questionnaire on specialist training in addiction treatment in 24 European countries. The final questionnaire consisted of 14 questions on either addiction medicine or addiction psychology, covering the nature and content of the training and institutional approval, the number of academic professorial positions, and the estimated number of specialists in each country. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Information was not received from all countries, but six (Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and Romania) reported no specialized addiction medicine training, while 17 countries did. Seven countries (Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, and the Netherlands) reported no specialized addiction psychology training, while 14 countries did. Training content and evaluation methods varied. Approval was given either by governments, universities, or professional societies. Eighteen countries reported having professorships in addiction medicine and 12 in addiction psychology. The number of specialists in addiction medicine or psychology varied considerably across the countries. <b><i>Discussion:</i></b> The survey revealed a large heterogeneity in training in addiction medicine and addiction psychology across Europe. Several countries lacked formal training, and where formal training was present, there was a large variation in the length of the training. Harmonization of training, as is currently the case for other medical and psychology specializations, is warranted to ensure optimal treatment for this under-served patient group.

But does it really was 'scientific' knowledge? And who had the last word on this problem, a problem that was in the first place epistemological but had also enormous social implications? Émile Zolas 20-bändiger Zyklus der Rougon-Macquart ist in der Forschung eingehend behandelt worden. Forstet man die einschlägigen Bibliographien, Schlagwortverzeichnisse, EDV-Kataloge oder Datenbanken durch, so fällt auf, dass Werke wie Germinal, Nana oder L'Assommoir unter den verschiedensten Blickwinkeln analysiert worden sind. Zugleich aber bemerkt man, dass Son Excellence "Eugène Rougon" (1876) und "Le Rêve" (1888) zu den weniger bearbeiteten Romanen des Rougon-Macquart-Zyklus zählen. Bei Son Excellence Eugène Rougon konzentrierte sich die Forschung bislang hauptsächlich auf die Frage, inwieweit in diesem Roman die politische und historische 'Wirklichkeit' wiedergegeben ist, bei "Le Rêve" auf so genannte mystische Aspekte. Die vorliegende Studie will zeigen, welche Funktion Medizin und Psychologie, die wie Physik und Chemie Pilotwissenschaften des 19. Jahrhunderts sind, in diesen beiden Romanen innehaben. Zwar hat auch die neueste Forschung, wie der folgende Bericht zeigen wird, der Rolle der Medizin und Psychologie im Hinblick auf den Rougon-Macquart-Zyklus durchaus Beachtung geschenkt, dabei aber die Werke Son Excellence Eugène Rougon und "Le Rêve" weitgehend außer Acht gelassen. Ein Grund dafür ist sicher darin zu sehen, dass mit Ausnahme einer - eher beiläufig erwähnten - ärztlichen Konsultation am Ende von "Le Rêve" (1) in keinem der beiden Romane eine Arztfigur vorkommt, so dass Medizin und Psychologie hier nicht durch einen "porte-parole" in den Vordergrund gerückt werden wie beispielsweise durch Doktor Cazenove in La Joie de vivre, Doktor Deberle in Une Page d'amour oder Doktor Pascal im gleichnamigen Abschlussroman des Zyklus. Ebensowenig agieren die Romanfiguren als Patienten, deren Krankheit anschaulich dargestellt würde, wie zum Beispiel die Kardiosklerose des Doktor Pascal (2). Dennoch sind Medizin und Psychologie, wie die vorliegende Studie darlegen will, weder in Son Excellence Eugène Rougon noch in Le Rêve außer Acht gelassen worden. Sie übernehmen in beiden Romanen wichtige Aufgaben: Die Dokumentation der Zeitgeschichte, die Plausibilisierung des Romangeschehens, die Sensibilisierung des Lesers und die Selbstbeobachtung des Autors. Der folgende Forschungsbericht gibt zunächst einen Überblick über die Medizin in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und nennt die für die Literatur relevanten Strömungen und Tendenzen. Danach werden die Wechselwirkungen von Medizin und Literatur sowie die wissenschaftliche Dokumentation Zolas in der Kritik dargelegt. Im Anschluss daran erfolgt die Aufarbeitung von vier zeithistorisch besonders bedeutsamen Themen, die für den Autor im Allgemeinen und für die medizinische Analyse der beiden Romane im Besonderen eine große Rolle spielen: Alkoholismus, Darwinismus, Hysterie und Religion. Diese Themen werden nach ihrer Beurteilung in der kulturgeschichtlichen, literaturwissenschaftlichen und medizinhistorischen Zola-Forschung zur Sprache gebracht. Auf dem Hintergrund dieser Aufarbeitung werden abschließend die offenen Fragen für Son Excellence Eugène Rougon und "Le Rêve" herausgestellt, die im Anschluss von der vorliegenden Studie untersucht und in einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Literatur diskutiert werden sollen. Research acutally did not much look upon "Son excellence Eugène Rougon" and "Le Rêve" referring to this, although especially these two novels tell a lot about the medical enthusiasm the founder of literary naturalsism felt inside.
