US Senator Joseph McCarthy attacked the American left; flow it is often Americans left of center who are accused of the new McCarthyism by seeking to suppress politically incorrect debates. The severe and widespread repression of the post-war US was far more ferocious than today's restrictions. Here, Shapiro talks about senator Joseph McCarthy. Adapted from the source document.
Culture, Politics, and McCarthyism
In: Independent Review, Band 1, Heft 1, S. 101-110
The substance & significance of McCarthyism are examined in historical perspective. It is argued that the debate over McCarthyism was largely limited to intellectuals & that its greatest effects occurred within academia & the cultural media. It is concluded that McCarthyism was a limited, quasi-populist ideology of anticommunism that was ultimately dismissed by US politicians, who rejected it as reductionist, simplistic, & a totalitarian menace. The thesis that repression may stimulate cultural creativity is presented as one possible effect of the McCarthy era. It is also suggested that in contemporary society, culture is allowed to flourish even during times of political repression because culture defuses, rather than stimulates, potential opposition. 9 References. One hundred years ago the Declaration of Principles on Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure was published in the USA, a century on, university faculty are still finding that institutions disapprove of them having public opinions on political issues. While some US universities restrict freedom of expression on campuses to painted-square zones, presumably where students can cope with hearing opinions they disagree with, faculty members are expected not to be outspoken on social media, or find themselves, as in the case of Steven Salaita, having their assistant professorship job offer withdrawn. Universities should be places where discoveries are made. Academia is an opportunity for students and teachers to challenge themselves; their preconceptions and values, and, perhaps, head off in a new direction. Here, Jolley takes a look at the academic freedom and the current threats from around the worldwide, from Ukraine to the US. Adapted from the source document.
