Die Essaysammlung, herausgegeben von einem Mau-Mau-Veteran, behandelt den Aufstand, der sich von 1952 bis 1956 in Kenia ereignete. Die Freiheitsbewegung gegen die britische Kolonialherrschaft führte unter der Leitung Jomo Kenyattas einen Guerillakrieg, der von den Briten blutig beendet wurde. 10.000 Menschen, die meisten waren Kikuyu, verloren ihr Leben. Kenyatta übernahm 1960 den Vorsitz der KANU-Partei und führte das Land 1963 in die Unabhängigkeit. Im Prozess der Nationenbildung, so der Herausgeber, blickt jedes Land auf seine geschichtliche Überlieferung zurück. Eine gleichberechtigte Staatsform, meint Odhiambo, kann nur durch die soziale und politische Integration von Minderheiten erzielt werden. Der Autor, ein britischer Polizeioffizier, den es nach Kenia verschlagen hat, erzählt in einer Mischung aus Reportage und Roman die schockierenden Ereignisse des Mau-Mau-Aufstandes und der Freiheitsbewegung. Die einzelnen Ereignisse und Situationen sind fiktiv, die Personen existierten, sind aber anonymisiert. Bei dem blutigen Konflikt, der sich um die Kontrolle der fruchtbaren, von Europäern kontrollierten White Highlands entzündete, kamen 14000 Afrikaner ums Leben.
