This book focuses on one of the prime movers in the unification of Lunigiana – a region which at the time was still broken up into a myriad of tiny feudal holdings, almost all in the hands of the various branches of the Malaspina family. The process of unification began in the fifteenth century, when various areas of the region were conquered by Milan and Florence, which also divided between them the hegemony of the remaining independent territories, while Genoa too displayed an interest in expansion in the region. As a result it became crucial for the local lords to manoeuvre between the various forces at play to maintain the independence of their own little states. Among the figures who displayed the greatest dexterity in this was Gabriele Malaspina, who became a leading player on the stage of local history. The book starts by illustrating the period in which Malaspina succeeded in obtaining his political independence, and then goes on to analyse the phase in which his policy came to be characterised by an absolute loyalty to Florence. Finally the book addresses the last part of the Marquis's life, marked by a progressive distancing from the Florentine alliance in favour of other entities, in which he nevertheless always succeeded in maintaining his independence

Concluding the XVIIIth Century the monarchy of Carlos III patronizes the expedition Malaspina with the goal of exploring the continents of America, Asia and Oceania. On their political aspect the journey persecuted the reformation of the obsolescent colonial Spanish model, and in their scientific facet the developement of a project of investigation in agreement with the European interests. Our goal is define the botanical studies accomplished by the naturalists of the expedition Malaspina in relationship with the scientific policy that from the Royal Botanical Garden from Madrid the Spanish crown projected for their overseas territories. ; Finalizando el siglo XVIII la monarquía de Carlos III patrocina la expedición Malaspina con el objetivo de explorar los continentes de América, Asia y Oceanía. En su apartado político el viaje perseguía la reforma del obsoleto modelo colonial español y en su faceta científica se desarrolló un proyecto de investigación acorde a los intereses de Europa. Nuestro objetivo es definir los estudios botánicos realizados por los naturalistas de la expedición Malaspina en relación con la política científica que desde el Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid la corona española proyectaba para sus territorios de ultramar.

This frontier of the Empire was included in the evolutionist sortings of the civilizations distinguishing between salvajes, bárbaros and civilizados indians, so that the imperial space was resized.

This article reviews the period spent by Malaspina in Madrid after his "voyage around the world", until his arrest in November 1795. Exploring sources hitherto ignored byMalaspinianhistoriography, the article focuses on Malaspina's participation in a literary dispute which took place in theDiario de Madrid, where he published under pseudonym four philosophical letters on Beauty. These letters constitute the direct antecedent of hisMeditation on Beauty, his most personal work, written in prison after his arrest. Lastly, the paper analyses Malaspina's relationship with his neighbour in Madrid, Fernanda O'Connock, Marchioness of Matallana, a woman linked to the political opposition to Manuel Godoy and an outstanding conspirator agent against the Prime Minister, who very possibly played a much more active role than previously recognised in the so-called "Malaspina conspiracy". ; Este artículo revisa el periodo transcurrido por Malaspina en Madrid tras su "viaje alrededor del mundo", hasta su detención en noviembre de 1795. A la luz de fuentes hasta ahora ignoradas por la historiografíamalaspiniana, se analiza la participación de Malaspina en una disputa literaria en elDiario de Madrid, donde llegó a publicar bajo seudónimo cuatro cartas filosóficas sobre la belleza que constituyen un antecedente directo de suMeditación filosófica, su obra más personal, escrita en presidio tras su arresto. Por último, se analiza la relación de Malaspina con su vecina madrileña Fernanda O'Connock, marquesa de Matallana, mujer vinculada a la oposición política a Godoy y destacada agente conspiradora contra el primer ministro en dicho periodo, quien muy posiblemente tuvo un papel mucho más activo de lo que hasta ahora se le había reconocido en la conspiración Malaspina.

The Spanish expedition round the world towards the end of the eighteenth century represented an attempt by the enlightencd monarchy to discover the keys to apprehcnding a sociological legality which would make it possible to reinforce imperial power in the face of irreparable political, military and economic failure. The analysis of this legality, in the context of the scientific expeditions of the time, is presented as similar to the aesthetics of Baroque gardening. ; La expedición española alrededor del mundo a fines del s. XVIII constituye un intento por parte de la monarquía ilustrada de desvelar las claves de una legalidad -la sociológica- que permitiese reciclar el poder imperial ante el fracaso irreparable de lo político, lo militar y lo económico. La heurística de esta legalidad, en el contexto de las expediciones científicas de la época, se configura como afín a la estética de la jardinería barroca.
