L. Thurow's Generating Inequality: Mechanisms of Distribution in the U.S. Economy (New York: Basic Books, 1975) should have differentiated clearly between the marginal productivity theory & the marginal productivity doctrine. As it was, the former has not been well developed, & authors such as O. Ashenfelter ("Will the Real Conventional Theory of Income Distribution Please Stand Up?" Social Science Quarterly, 1977, 58, June, 147-150) fail to distinguish between doctrine & theory. Doctrine implies beliefs while theory is logical & entails prediction. The dangerous aspect of using these terms synonymously is that rejection of the ethical judgments made by the positivists easily results in the misunderstanding of how the principle contributes to analysis. If the reader of Thurow discards comments on "marginal productivity" a better-than-average understanding of the distribution of earnings & wealth will emerge. L. Kamel.
