Malawi's economy & the influence of Scottish missionaries are discussed in a response to the following questions: If the political & educational consequences of the work in Blantyre & Livingstonia Missions were so considerable, was their impact on the structure of Malawi's economy of no significance at all? How far was the apparent `deadness' of northern Malawi in the twentieth century a consequence of Livingstonia's impact? Some conclusions drawn include that the Scottish missions were only one of several influences on the Malawi economy, some of which are the impact of international trade, a southern oriented labor migrant system, & mining interests in South Africa. Livingstonia provided some northerners with skills that made them more prosperous than their neighbors, but it also created dependency & poverty structures which it was unable to destroy. G. Simpson.
