Describes the emergence of a new independent labor movement in Mexico with the political power to challenge the government, arguing that given the current crisis in democracy as manifest by PRI & PAN machinations, such a development has the potential to shift the political system toward the left. Some historical background is provided for context before looking at Mexico's adoption of a neoliberal agenda in 1982, which meant a move away from economic nationalism & implementation of a policy of privatization & encouragment of foreign investment. Privatization & industrial reorganization did a number on union density, & the union leadership did little for workers while hustling to protect its economic & political interests. From this arose opposition that slowly grew into an independent labor movement. This movement has galvanized in opposition to Vicente Fox, who has carried out a conservative political & economic agenda. The movement has been successful in impeding Fox's efforts to privatize the electric power & petroleum industries & from overhauling labor law. Brief attention is then given to the role of the left in the progressive movement, described as small but noteworthy, asserting that the classical socialist paradigm remains an influential idea. It is concluded that the consolidation of this labor movement coupled with some challenges to democracy could mean a mass upheaval in Mexico & a push toward genuine democratization & the left. D.
