The real causes for the foundation of the regional party called Kerala Congress in Kerala goes back to the 1960 elections to the Kerala Legislative Assembly and the formation of the government in the aftermath. Christian–Ezhava tussle in the party and the government paved way for rising dissenting voices in the Congress party unit in Kerala. Alleged ill treatment of the Congress leaders towards Christian and Nair leaders made the dissenting leaders to come out of the party and to form a new party called Kerala Congress which was hoped to emerge as a powerful regional party in Kerala like in the neighbouring State of Tamil Nadu. Instead of being an alternative to the Indian National Congress and CPI (M), the two major political parties in Kerala, the party was split into in to several pieces over the years. Party leaders were engaged in the race for power and nepotism which paved way for constant rebellion and splits in the party.
