The article focuses on one of the episodes of "The Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan (an episode in the House of the Interpreter) and the change in its emblematic content in the adaptations of J.Bunyan's book for readers of the 19th – the 20th centuries. The object of study is the meaning of the Interpreter's image and that of the content and form of the seven emblematic descriptions in the episode. The subject of the study is the transformation of the source text in the adaptations of the 19th – the 20th centuries. The study is based on J.Bunyan's book and texts by Helen L. Taylor, "Little Pilgrim's Progress" and artin Powell 's comics. The tasks of the study were as follows: to determine the meaning of the episode in question in the plot of the book; establish the meaning of the Interpreter's image in the context of the 17th – 18th c. English culture; to analyse the connection of the emblem complex with the Baroque religious culture; describe the changes in the adaptations of the Pilgrim's Progress for readers of the 19th and the 20th centuries. The study showed that the Interpreter's image is the key one. The shift in cultural paradigms led to the destruction of the original set of emblems, but the authors of the adaptations used J.Bunyan's emblems to create their own mini-sets that met the needs of their readership. Although both the formal and the content of the original text have changed in many respects since the 17th century, both the role of the Interpreter and the purpose of the emblems in the adaptations have been remaining unchanged.

Ein interdisziplinärer Band im Open-Access: Die Aufwertung der Volkssprachen in der Frühen Neuzeit führte zu einer Intensivierung und internationalen Öffnung der europäischen Übersetzungskultur. Der Gebrauch des Englischen bleibt in dieser Zeit allerdings weitgehend auf die Insel beschränkt, während die Sprache auf dem Kontinent noch wenig geläufig ist. Erst seit dem 18. Jahrhundert gewinnt sie an internationaler Bedeutung und steigt schließlich zur modernen Weltsprache auf. Der Band fokussiert auf die vormoderne Situation und untersucht in 19 literatur-, kunst-, philosophie- und frömmigkeitsgeschichtlichen Fallstudien die deutsche Rezeption der frühneuzeitlichen englischen Literatur und Kultur. Mit Blick auf das bislang unzureichend erforschte deutsch-englische Interaktionsfeld erhellt er ebenso ausgewählte Personen, Institutionen und Wissensfelder wie Werkübertragungen, Gattungstransformationen und Übersetzungspraktiken, die den bereits in dieser Zeit bemerkenswert dichten Austausch zwischen England und dem Alten Reich prägten. Welche Netzwerke und Medien ermöglichten z.B. die Rezeption einflussreicher Denker und Dichter wie Bacon, Hobbes oder Milton im deutschsprachigen Raum; wie kam es gleichsam im Mutterland des Protestantismus zu einer auffallend intensiven Übersetzung englischer Erbauungsliteratur; welche Rolle spielten Parallelübersetzungen oder auch Übersetzungen aus zweiter Hand, etwa dort, wo der kulturelle Transfer über eine dritte Sprache wie das Französische oder Niederländische erfolgte? Auf solche Fragen werden im Band neue Antworten gegeben.

Abstract
The article addresses the different narratives that characterize English constitutional history. It first examines the mainstream narrative, i. e., the retrospective reading of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century constitutional events dispensed by jurists and politicians in an attempt to pack the Establishment Constitution. It then focuses on the alternative legal narratives about the Constitution elaborated during the Civil War and the Restoration. Among them, it ascertains John Bunyan's impact on the Establishment Constitution. Bunyan was a member of the New Model Army, a radical, and a Puritan who ended up in prison. Despite this background, he exerted a strong influence on Victorian society and on Thackeray's representation of the body politic. As a consequence, Bunyan entered the political discourse in the first half of the nineteenth century when politicians started to reform English representative institutions, and therefore became part of the Establishment Constitution.
