CATCHALL JAILS
In: The annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Band 293, S. 28-34
ISSN: 0002-7162
One of every 100 Americans passes through the 10,000 jails and lockups in the US per yr. They form an assortment of deviants, ranging from murderer to alcoholic. Due to this catch-all nature it is difficult to formulate any program of treatment or rehabilitation. The smaller the jail the more difficult to maintain t.:t, minimum of constructive effort. This applies especially to the unsentenced jail inmates who arrive and leave suddenly. The crudest of sanitation facilities are lacking in majority of catch-all city and county jails. Despite the progress made in recent yrs, especially in the elimination of the kangaroo court, personnel selection and training are neglected and prospects are not good for adequate salaries. Since places of detention are necessary for community welfare, intelligent and concerted community is the only force to effectively get at the problem. H. M. Trice.
Jail speak
"When Ben Langston took a job at the State Correctional Institution at Rockview, it was because there were few other options. At his previous job-putting labels on water bottles-he did not have cups of human waste thrown in his face. He did not have to finger sweaty armpits in search of weapons. There were no threats against his life. But the jail paid better. Jail Speak is a memoir written from a guard's perspective. It's about the grind, about dehumanization, drama, punishment, and the cycles of harm perpetrated by the prison industry. It's about masculinity and conformity and emotional detachment. It's a look at the inside that you didn't want to know about, and it's for mature audiences only. Know your limits"--
