Ulster, Ireland and the Somme tells the story of the relationship between Ulster, Ireland and the Somme area of northern France, which has now endured for nearly a century. The 1916 Battle of the Somme is a key event in Irish memory of the Great War, and thousands of people from both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic visit the area each year, but the history of the landscape and the memorials they see has never been told in any detail until now

The centenary of the Easter 1916 Rising was a source of both celebration and no little anxiety in Ireland. On the one hand, the centenary provided a welcome opportunity for Irish people to take stock of the violent past that optimists hope it has recently left behind. On the other hand, it signalled an occasion for a form of legitimacy contest as various groups, the Irish government among them, jostled to present themselves as the true heirs of the Rising. Sparked by these controversies, this paper asks what meaning the Rising holds for contemporary Ireland. Is it a sacrifice to be redeemed, a patrimony to be claimed, or a past to be shucked off? The answer to this question, it argues, will have a significant bearing on how Ireland faces an uncertain future in an increasingly dangerous world.

Women were an integral part to the Easter Rising, yet until recently, their contributions have been forgotten. Those who have been remembered are often women who bucked conservative Irish society's notions of femininity and chose to actively participate in combat, which has led to a skewed narrative that favors their contributions over the contributions of other women. Historians and scholars favor these narratives because they are empowering and act as clear foils to the heroic narratives of the male leaders in the Easter Rising. In reality, however, most of the women who joined Cumann na mBan or worked for the leaders of the Easter Rising chose to do so knowing they would take on a supportive role. They did so willingly, and even put the cause of Irish independence above the need for women's rights. Their duties reflected this reality. Once the Easter Rising was underway, women were needed to support the rebels and did so often under fire from British and Irish fighters. For their participation in the rebellion, some women were arrested, while as a whole, the contributions of these women were derided and downplayed by the larger public. Those women not imprisoned would go on to establish the martyr-myth of the heroic and male Irish revolutionaries executed for their part in the Easter Rising. This led to the women's histories being forgotten or ignored in favor of the heroic narrative. Even when pensions were made available to compensate participants of the Easter Rising, women only applied out of need and for fear of poverty, rather than to receive recognition. To this day, Ireland and Irish history scholars have ignored the participation of gender-conforming women in favor of the more heroic narrative of women whose experiences more closely resemble those of the Easter Rising's male martyrs.

Like many countries, Ireland has a chaotic and tumultuous past which results in challenges for the state in presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and international audiences. The years between 1912 and 1922 were arguably the most transformative in modern Irish history as it was a decade of war, revolution and rapid social change. The 1916 Easter Rising- a failed rebellion against British rule- is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity. My paper will explore how the centenary commemorations of this historic event are a valuable opportunity for Ireland to engage with its past openly and creatively on a substantial platform. Ireland is not alone in marking a transformative event that happened a century ago. A divided Middle East, a reunited Germany along with Poland, Czech/Slovak Republics and Hungary, will also mark milestone anniversaries in formations of their respective modern states. These countries are facing challenges of creating meaningful and informed commemorative events which must fully acknowledge the complexity of historical events and their legacy, the multiple readings of history and of the multiple identities and traditions which are part of a country's historical experience. My paper will explore the key role that the state plays in the 2016 commemorative programme and I will examine the challenges it faces to ensure that the marking a politically significant event is measured, reflective and informed by a full acknowledgement of the complexity of history and its legacy. Commemoration is the product of negotiation and the process of commemoration is an opportunity for a nations to collectively remind themselves of significant moments in history through a series of ceremonies, parades, cultural events, lectures, concerts and extensive literature which are provided by national and local organisations. Historians such as Diarmuid Ferriter, Roy Foster and Joe Lee are all united in their expression on the need for the Irish state to broaden frameworks and reconceptualise historical narratives and commemorative practices to affectively deal with the pluralist history of political events in Ireland. Historically, the commemorations of the 1916 Easter Rising have tended to flip flop. In 1966, the 50th commemorations were momentous and large in scale whilst in 1991 for the 75th anniversary, the commemorations were low key and with events being organised by independent committees instead of the state. There are many pressures of commemorating the Easter Rising including how to commemorate a moment of political violence during a peace process, the threat of reducing historical remembrance to a costume drama and ensuring the state does not transform the commemorations into a non-problematic heritage event. I will demonstrate in particular how the advent of the academic field of visual culture- with its new ways of seeing, knowing, understanding and participating- generates particular kinds of commemorative practices. This includes technological advances in museum display techniques, increasing mobility of images and new evidence of historical events which broadens historical narratives.

The recent centenary commemorations of the 1916 Easter Rising were notable for the considerable effort the Irish government put into making them inclusive. However, inclusiveness in this context masks the fact that the commemorations were exclusive of a particular brand of memory that traces in very uncomplicated fashion its own lineage back not just to 1916, but also specifically to the political violence utilized by the Easter Rising rebels. Not included within the state category of the inclusive, for example, was the second largest Easter Rising commemoration in the North, fronted by masked and uniformed figures. This article seeks to shed light on the tenebrous netherworld where the tradition of armed republicanism - through a combination of its own "purist" volition and state strategies of de-legitimization and marginalization - has been confined. It is written from the perspective that the dialectic between revolutionary memory and constitutional memory is an example of how the past is assessed through the prism of the present, and not with an eye for accuracy.

The kidnapping of nationalist leader Bulmer Hobson is one of the more intriguing sideshows of the Easter Rising of 24-9 April 1916. The Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB)1 was responsible for planning and leading the weeklong rebellion against British rule in Ireland. Members of the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Citizen Army, Cumann na mBan and Na Fianna Éireann participated in the rising, which mainly took place in Dublin. The British authorities later executed sixteen men, including the seven members of the Military Council, for their involvement in the insurrection.2 Hobson has the dubious distinction of having been held against his will by his IRB comrades from the afternoon of Good Friday, 21 April 1916 until the evening of Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, the day the rebellion broke out.

As Ireland prepares to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising, Heather Jones traces how this failed military insurrection against British rule – mounted by a small, unrepresentative minority of Irish republicans – has evolved as a source of pride, division and controversy across the island over the course of a tumultuous century.

AbstractThis article describes an empirical study examining the official commemorations of the 1916 Easter Rising, held in Dublin on Easter Sunday, 27 March 2016. Through a combination of newspaper content analysis and empirical data, this study examines the process of generating what Mabel Berezin and Rogers Brubaker have termed 'communities of feeling'. Analysis of newspaper content between September 2014 and March 2016 highlighted four main themes: (1) a belief that Ireland would have attained sovereignty even if the 1916 Rising had not happened; (2) the equivocal stance of the government towards celebrating the 1916 Rising, which throughout the Northern Ireland troubles habitually presented difficulties for the state; (3) comparisons between commemorating the centenary in 2016 and the jubilee in 1966; and (4) reflections on the purpose of commemorations, particularly the changed emphasis on the role played by women during the Rising as well as the inclusion of religious faiths other than the Catholic Church in such commemorations. The second section of the study provides an analysis of the commemorative events and the nature of contemporary Irish nationalism based on data collected using Non‐Participant Observation. Overall, the study seeks to understand the inter‐connections between nationalism, emotions and social action in the context of Irish nationalism as portrayed during the 1916 commemorations in Dublin.

Despite the fact that the 1916 Easter Rising has given rise to many critical inquiries and occasioned heated debate among nationalist and revisionist historians, this historical event has been revered almost as a creation story for the Republic of Ireland. This paper will examine three plays that revisit the Rising and feature the generally neglected participation of women in the events. By illustrating women's quandaries and antagonisms, the plays either reflect on the causes and effects of remote English rule in Ireland or delineate the immediate impact of the Easter Rising on different social strata. Their alternative perspectives often feature the conflicting consequences of the Rising and illuminate ignored yet credible facets that may serve to rebut the received interpretations. Although there is a relatively long time span during which these works were produced, the social contexts in which the playwrights lived and worked give rise to diverse portrayals of the same political turmoil. More significantly, these plays initiate a debate on the Easter Rising yet produce healing effects by restaging historical traumas. The three plays are Yeats's less discussed play The Dreaming of the Bones (1919), Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars (1926), and Colm Tóibín's Beauty in a Broken Place (2004).

"This book examines what distinguished New Zealand's response to the Rising and its aftermath - particularly from Australian and Canadian responses, the two Dominions whose constitutional relations to the United Kingdom were frequently cited in determining Irish independence. Organized chronologically, it opens with a chapter detailing the ANZACS' role in retaking Dublin. Chapters two and three chart the response of Australasian women to the Rising and the politics of gender and violence encoded in private and newspaper reports. Chapter four examines the cultural politics of Dunedin, the financial capital of New Zealand at that time, as representative of one type of response, while chapters five and six investigate specific Catholic responses nationally and internationally. Chapter seven draws on extensive archival research to investigate the ways New Zealand's Fenian families negotiated conscription even while they sought to continue to promote the Republican cause. The next two chapters chart contrasting responses to the aftermath-one detailing shifts in attitude in an Australian Catholic newspaper between 1916 and 1919; the other analysing the rise, triumph, and demise of New Zealand's virulent Protestant Political Association. The final chapter situates the New Zealand response within the constitutional consequences of the Rising for the British Empire"--

The Easter Rising of 1916- a failed rebellion against British rule- is the pivotal event in the creation of the modern Irish state and is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity. With 2016 marking 100years since the Easter Rising, my paper will explore how the recent centenary commemorations of this historic event have been a valuable opportunity for Ireland to engage with its past openly and creatively on a substantial platform. Historically, the commemorations of the 1916 Easter Rising have tended to flip flop. In 1966, the 50th commemorations were momentous and large in scale whilst in 1991 for the 75th anniversary, the commemorations were low key and with events being organised by independent committees instead of the state. Earlier this year, ambitious centenary commemorations have produced a broadening of frameworks and a reconceptualization of historical narratives and commemorative practices to affectively deal with the pluralist history of political events in Ireland. My paper will reflect on how sites such as the National Museum of Ireland and the Irish Museum of Modern Art have demonstrated their significant responsibility in facilitating collective reflection, celebration and engagement with the state's centenary programme this year. My paper will explore the key role that national cultural institutions play in the commemorative process, examine transformations in contemporary commemorations and identify challenges which national cultural institutions face when presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and international audiences in a measured, reflective and informed manner with a full acknowledgement of the complexity of history and its legacy.
