This volume examines how social media is evolving as an industry-it is an extension of traditional media industries, yet it is distinctly different in its nature and ability to build relationships among users. Examining social media in both descriptive and analytical ways, the chapters included herein present an overview of the social media industries, considering the history, development, and theoretical orientations used to understand social media. Covered are: Business models found among the social media industries and social media as a form of marketing. Social media as a form of entertainment content, both in terms of digital content, and as a tool in the production of news. Discussions of ethics and privacy as applied to the area of social media. An examination of audience uses of social media considering differences among Latinos, African-Americans, and people over the age of 35. Overall, the volume provides a timely and innovative look at the business aspects of social media, and it has much to offer scholars, researchers, and students in media and communication, as well as media practitioners.

The core topic of the dissertation is the influence of networking of the real with the digital world on the everyday working life of people who work in the industry. The author investigates determining factors for diffusion of these networking technologies in industry 4.0 that change the relationship between (wo)man and machine, as much as the way of working of skilled workers at average employment level. She differentiates between three criteria for the diffusion: Scope of application, level of application and type of application. Skilled workers also play an active role in the diffusion process because only their trust in new technologies increases acceptance, as well as the level of diffusion, and therefore determines the success of technical innovations. Kernthema der Dissertation ist der Einfluss der Vernetzung der realen mit der digitalen Welt auf den Arbeitsalltag der Beschäftigten in der Industrie. Die Autorin untersucht Bedingungsfaktoren für die Diffusion dieser Vernetzungstechnologien in der Industrie 4.0, die das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Maschine ebenso verändern wie die Arbeitsweise der Facharbeiter:innen auf der mittleren Beschäftigungsebene. Sie unterscheidet drei Kriterien für die Diffusion: Anwendungsbreite, Anwendungsgrad und Anwendungsart. Auch die Facharbeiter:innen spielen eine aktive Rolle in dem Diffusionsprozess, denn erst ihr Vertrauen in neue Technologien steigert Akzeptanz sowie Verbreitungsgrad und bestimmt damit den Erfolg technischer Neuerungen.

The aim of this book is to stimulate research on the topic of the Social Internet of Things, and explore how Internet of Things architectures, tools, and services can be conceptualized and developed so as to reveal, amplify and inspire the capacities of people, including the socialization or collaborations that happen through or around smart objects and smart environments. From new ways of negotiating privacy, to the consequences of increased automation, the Internet of Things poses new challenges and opens up new questions that often go beyond the technology itself, and rather focus on how the technology will become embedded in our future communities, families, practices, and environment, and how these will change in turn.
