The evolution of Idrija, the oldest mining town in Slovenia, has always been affiliated with the extraction of mercury-rich ore, which is why the settlement was shaped as an agglomeration alongside the mining shafts and objects. The extraction of mercury also brought about the flow of knowledge. Knowledge, as well as attitudes towards it, gained great importance in the town, being considered a technological capital, and one of the founding characteristics of the Idrija habitus, which also encompasses a wide spectrum of the town's imaginarium. Parts of this are definitely the heritage of mining, architectural heritage, and non-material (living) heritage, represented primarily by Idrija lace, the Miners' Brass Band, and culinary specialties (žlikrofi). The characteristics and achievements of the mining activity, local culture and community are all listed on the UNESCO world heritage list. The most important places of the imaginarium of the town are the restored individual important objects and machinery, and certain places which held an important historical memory and thus became the founding identity of the network. Everything that was left out, and remained unrestored, dislocated from the visual field, is slowly fading from the consciousness of the community, despite the fact that some of these places held an important historical value, and thus they are losing an identifying role and symbolic meaning to the community. The image of the town has, for centuries, been dual: the mining and bourgeois bottom of the valley and the miners' dwellings in the margins. Such a memory of the town is slowly fading away, although individual exceptional buildings and devices, in which the heritage of the town and mining are concentrated, still stand out.

Članek obravnava dogodke v dolini reke Idrije na italijansko- slovenski meji ob vstopu Slovenije v EU 1. maja 2004. Gre za povezano kulturno regijo na obeh straneh reke, ki je bila že v preteklih stoletjih mejna, a jo je najbolj prizadela meja med Italijo in Jugoslavijo po 2. svetovni vojni. Prekinila je vitalne povezave, zato so kraji na obeh straneh meje nazadovali. Na krajevni proslavi in srečanjih domačinov v naslednjih mesecih je prišla do izraza skupna tradicionalna kultura, ne kot nostalgična rekonstrukcija, ampak kot izraz olajšanja po zgodovinskih travmah. *** Analyzed are the events that had taken place in the Idrija River Valley when Slovenia joined the European Union on May 1, 2004. The villages on both sides of the river were the ones most affected by the newly established border between Italy and Yugoslavia after the Second World War. The months following the entrance of Slovenia in the European Union were marked by a number of festivities, cultural events, and encounters organized by the local population. These reflect the common traditional cultural elements that, rather than a nostalgic reconstruction, express a sincere relief after the traumas of the past.

Abstract. The town of Idrija is located in an area with an increased seismic hazard in W Slovenia and is partly built on alluvial sediments or artificial mining and smelting deposits which can amplify seismic ground motion. There is a need to prepare a comprehensive seismic microzonation in the near future to support seismic hazard and risk assessment. To study the applicability of the microtremor horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method for this purpose, 70 free-field microtremor measurements were performed in a town area of 0.8 km2 with 50–200 m spacing between the points. The HVSR analysis has shown that it is possible to derive the sediments' resonance frequency at 48 points. With the remaining one third of the measurements, nearly flat HVSR curves were obtained, indicating a small or negligible impedance contrast with the seismological bedrock. The isofrequency (a range of 2.5–19.5 Hz) and the HVSR peak amplitude (a range of 3–6, with a few larger values) maps were prepared using the natural neighbor interpolation algorithm and compared with the geological map and the map of artificial deposits. Surprisingly no clear correlation was found between the distribution of resonance frequencies or peak amplitudes and the known extent of the supposed soft sediments or deposits. This can be explained by relatively well-compacted and rather stiff deposits and the complex geometry of sedimentary bodies. However, at several individual locations it was possible to correlate the shape and amplitude of the HVSR curve with the known geological structure and prominent site effects were established in different places. In given conditions (very limited free space and a high level of noise) it would be difficult to perform an active seismic refraction or MASW measurements to investigate the S-wave velocity profiles and the thickness of sediments in detail, which would be representative enough for microzonation purposes. The importance of the microtremor method is therefore even greater, because it enables a direct estimation of the resonance frequency without knowing the internal structure and physical properties of the shallow subsurface. The results of this study can be directly used in analyses of the possible occurrence of soil–structure resonance of individual buildings, including important cultural heritage mining and other structures protected by UNESCO. Another application of the derived free-field isofrequency map is to support soil classification according to the recent trends in building codes and to calibrate Vs profiles obtained from the microtremor array or geophysical measurements.

Cultural and natural elements contribute to the development of rural areas. Identifying and evaluating development aspects and the interconnection of cultural values and local stakeholders are key to managing cultural values. This article defines cultural values with development potential by studying the relevant research literature and legislation, carrying out field studies in the Idrija countryside, and using an online questionnaire to evaluate development aspects.

Abstract. In this paper we examine the Coulomb (static) stress pattern following the two moderate magnitude earthquakes in NW Slovenia during 1998 and 2004. These earthquakes ruptured patches of the NW-SE striking Ravne fault that crosses the Krn Mountain. The objective is to investigate the seismicity patterns for this area of Slovenia given that future earthquakes may be triggered as a result of stress changes along neighbouring faults. Our findings include: a) stress levels have increased along the active Ravne fault for all models discussed b) stress levels have decreased along the active, NW-SE striking Idrija fault and c) stress levels throughout the crust have increased along the E-W direction but have decreased in the N-S direction (stress shadow effect). We also mapped a better correlation of the off-fault aftershock locations with stress maps incorporating the regional stress field.

AbstractThe Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy) is the coastal area of the Mediterranean Sea most highly contaminated by mercury (Hg) due to fluvial inputs from the Isonzo/Soča River system, draining over 500 years' worth of cinnabar extraction activity from the Idrija mining district (Western Slovenia). The aim of this research is to investigate the concentration of Hg in hair samples taken from the general population of the Friuli Venezia Giulia (FVG) Region coastal area, as a marker of chronic exposure to Hg. Three hundred and one individuals — 119 males and 182 females — were recruited by convenience sampling in Trieste in September 2021. An amount of approximately 100 mg of hair was collected from the occipital scalp of each participant to measure the respective Hg concentrations (expressed as mg/kg). Moreover, participants completed a self-report questionnaire collecting extensive socio-demographic and life-style information. A multiple linear regression analysis was employed to investigate factors associated with increased levels of Hg concentration in hair. A mean Hg concentration in hair of 1.63 mg/kg was found, slightly above the 1.0 mg/kg threshold recommended by the WHO for pregnant women and children, although still well below the no observed adverse effects level (NOAEL) of 10 mg/kg. Among respondents, 55.6% showed a Hg concentration in hair > 1 mg/kg, 22.9% > 2 mg/kg, and 2 participants exhibited Hg levels > 10 mg/kg. The adjusted mean hair Hg level increased in those subjects who reported a preference for shellfish/crayfish/mollusks (RC = 0.35; 95%CI: 0.16; 0.55), whereas it decreased in those who reported a preference for frozen fish (RC = -0.23; 95%CI: − 0.39; − 0.06). Though a risk alert for Hg exposure for coastal residents from FVG is deemed unnecessary at this time, it is recommended that pregnant women limit their ingestion of locally caught fish to < 4 servings/month.
