Cimadomo, G. (2017), Design as a tool in the module History of Architecture. Learning by Doing. ICERI2017 Proceedings) ; We present the teaching experience of the History of Architecture II module related to the last three academic years when we have experienced the introduction of a practical exercise aimed at actively learning the theoretical content of the subject: the history of architecture between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. The problem-based and the learning-by-doing methodologies have been applied within the framework of a broader educational innovation project that has involved different undergraduate subjects in architecture. The exercise is based on the realization of a project at the level of a preliminary project of a building contextualized in the Renaissance or the Baroque eras, varying this last parameter each year. Each student had to identify himself in the role of an architect of the modern era, search for a patron and choose the typology to build among those studied in the theoretical classes. The freedom offered in all these parameters has allowed each student to freely search for their hobbies and personal interests, being an incentive to carry out the task assigned. This exercise requires a different approach to the buildings studied throughout the semester, to understand the logic and compositional rules underlying each typology, uses, needs, as well as constructive solutions. The preliminary phase of the exercise also requires a historical understanding of the patron and his hobbies, of the geographical environment in which the exercise will be carried out, as well as the cultural and political context of the chosen temporal arc. The aim is to promote learning through project activity even in traditionally theoretical subjects such as the history of architecture, generating dynamics closer to the expectations of students without sacrificing the learning required by the curriculum. The results obtained, both quantitative and qualitative, contrasted by anonymous surveys conducted at the end of each year, show a greater linkage of students to the subject, a deeper learning of the compositional rules of the studied ages, and greater satisfaction with the dynamics applied, without sacrificing the objectives of explaining the processes in the environment of the society of the time and its direct relationship with the present. As with previous experiences, we demonstrate the need to adapt teaching methodologies to the generational changes of the students that study for the degree in architecture to achieve the pedagogical objectives of the training of architects in the 21st century. ; Universidad de Málaga. Architectural repositories like archdaily, dezeen, divisare, emerged with the internet 2.0, have made possible the 'democratization of visibility', by which small platforms and/or architects can opt for great visibility previously only accessible to large structures. They offer a large amount of built and unbuilt projects everyday, as their sustainability is based on quantity instead of quality, creating a huge flow of information difficult to classify. These platforms have become the place where architectural knowledge is stored. They also make obsolete the traditional approaches based on chronological and geographical contexts, and establish a simplification based on the culture of the immediacy. These repositories are no more only dissemination tools but more and more inspiration sources for new developments, making the analysis of their influence nowadays relevant. Today's History of Architecture could be narrated through online repositories, as they are the place where a huge number of projects localized worldwide are stored, creating multiple asynchronous links between them. It is a provocative approach, but it also shows there is not only one history to be presented, but multiple, sometimes parallel, histories. We face a situation of dispersion, where the multiple theoretical contributions have to be made compatible, a very different context compared with the beginning of the 20th century. Until now, research in the field of Architectural History has not applied the quantitative approach based on big data (and why not, AI). Also if creating a history of present architecture exclusively from digital sources has methodological flaws, new approaches, tools and strategies can be applied. Together with repositories, social networks have turned the user into a producer, editor and critic of architecture –often at the same time– and this is changing the traditional rules of architectural dissemination. ; Universidad de Málaga. This paper seeks to redefine the scholarship on Aldo Rossi (1931-1997), an Italian architect known for having reintroduced symbolism to European architecture after the 1960s. My thesis addresses questions surrounding the development of Rossi's theory of city morphology, proposing that it was rooted in antifascist sentiments and influenced by politics of the Cold War. Rossi's professional growth is outlined through a period conditioned by the reactionary ideologies of postwar Europe, which deeply influenced the nation's culture and shaped artistic production. This thesis relies on unpublished archival material from Rossi's early career that documents the leading political and philosophical ideas of his time. It reveals Rossi's growing interest in developing a theory for a type of architecture and urban design rational in form and socialist in content, driven by the ethos of an emerging political Left. In this narrative, Rossi's work is contextualized in the efforts of a generation of Italian architects who conducted collective research on behalf of the Ina-casa program of national reconstruction in conjunction with the era's leading politicians. This collaborative effort ultimately led Rossi to develop theories for a structuralist reading of the city, as well as to the formulation of a type of humanist architecture in support of the collective consciousness of the Italian "public city" in the latter half of the twentieth century. ; Recommended Citation: Miller, Sonia Melani, "Aldo Rossi: The City as the Locus of Collective Memory and the Making of the Public City in Cold War Italy" (2017). As we move further into the 21st century, architects, planners, landscape architects and the general public are increasingly concerned with climate change, environmental degradation, energy and water consumption and the role the built environment plays in contributing to or addressing these issues. Buildings consume almost 40% of the energy used in this country. The way we access buildings, the materials used to construct them, the demands of users within the building all require the earth's increasingly precious resources. So how did we get here? How did our built environment evolve to require so much energy, water and so many resources? It is easy to think that our environmental concerns regarding architecture's role in the environment are new to society. However, environmental worries are not new. This course explores the history of sustainable architecture with a look back to vernacular building styles and passive design strategies that addressed climatic factors. We will investigate the Industrial Revolution as it transformed buildings and transportation and study the varied responses to the degradation of the natural world through the Arts and Crafts Movement and writers and thinkers of the 19th century. We will contrast our study of early environmentalists and their ideas for the built environment with more mainstream efforts of architects and designers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Frank Lloyd Wright and le Corbusier, to better understand the formation of architecture's historical cannon and the environmental outliers who critiqued the dangers of the 'Machine Age.' We will then explore more accelerated trends of the 1960s and '70s that paralleled the birth of modern environmentalism in the wake of exposés such as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. Finally, the course will conclude with an examination of recent ideas surrounding 'green' buildings such as LEED certification and the Living Building Challenge. Understanding the history of the built environment offers a powerful lens for understanding our environmental future. There will be a mid-term and final, and two written assignments: one a short, written response and the second, a longer research paper.
