GPO 1986 is a mixture of eight herbal extracts from Canna indica L., Polyagala chinensis L., Clinacanthus nutans Lindau, Ammania baccifera L., Acanthus ebracteatus Vahl, Mallotus Philippensis Muell. Arg., Smilax corbularia Kunthr, and Pygmaeopremma herbacea (Roxb.) Mold. This recipe is used by the Government Pharmaceutical Organization in a clinical trial on mammary cancer. Chronic toxicity of GPO 1986 was conducted in 168 Wistar rats randomly divided into 7 groups of 24 rats each (12 males and 12 females ). Group 1 was a control group receiving distilled water and groups 2 to 4 were orally administered with GPO 1986 at doses of 0.24, 1.2, 3.6 g/kg/day, respectively, for 6 months. Group 5 was the recovery group receiving GPO 1986 at the dose of 3.6 g/kg/day for 6 months; after that, the animals were further raised without GPO 1986 for 2 weeks before autopsy. Group 6 was the control group receiving distilled water. Group 7 was orally administered GPO 1986 at the dose of 3.6 g/kg/day for 9 months. The results showed that GPO 1986 did not affect body weights and animal health. Male rats receiving GPO 1986 at doses of 1.2 and 3.6 g/kg/day for 6 months and male rats receiving GPO 1986 for 9 months showed significant decreases of hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cells. Female rats receiving GPO 1986 for nine months had a significant reduction in platelet counts (p<0.05). However, these hematological changes were within the rat reference values. Male rats receiving GPO 1986 for nine months had a significant increase in AST level (p<0.05), whereas the potassium level was significantly decreased (p<0.05). Histopathological results of visceral organs in the six-month and the nine-month treatment groups did not show any alterations caused by GPO 1986. In conclusion, GPO 1986 did not produce chronic toxicity in Wistar rats. Key words: herbal extract, toxicity, GPO 1986, mammary cancer

Abstract
Oxidation and microbial spoilage have a negative effect on the quality of meat and meat products, causing changes in their sensory and nutritional properties. Herbs contain biologically active compounds, like phenols with antioxidative and antimicrobial properties. Phenols can be used as substitutes for commercial antioxidants to prevent lipid oxidation, thus maintaining the colour and flavour of the product. The aim of the study was to investigate the the potential use of herbal extracts in ethanol/water application for the maintenance of pork meat quality during storage. Four herbs growing in Latvia — nettle (Urtica dioica L.), lovage (Levisticum officinale L.), oregano (Origanum vulgare), and horseradish (Armoracia rusticana L.) were chosen for the study. An optimal ethanol concentration for the extraction of the phenolic compounds was obtained with ethanol 50%/water 50% concentration (v/v). Prepared herbal extracts were added to chilled pork to determine the quality of the pork during storage. Changes in meat quality and its sensory properties for chilled pork without extracts appeared on day 18 of storage. Negative changes in sensory properties of meat samples with nettle extract were observed on day 22 of storage, and with lovage, oregano, and horseradish extracts on day 32. Statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) were observed for microbiological indices between pork samples with herbal extracts and the control sample.

Hyperlipidaemia is one of the essential public health risk factors that can cause other metabolic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Dieting and healthy lifestyle have been among the primary approaches. However, medication is required to regulate the lipid profile in some instances. Therefore, there has been an increase in interest in using or integrating herbal medicine with modern medicine in treating hyperlipidaemia. Nonetheless, preparing standardised herbal extract or products has been one of the major challenges in the herbal industry. Standardising herbal extract or product (single plant-based or mixture of multiple herbs) is needed to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of the herbal maintained from batch to batch before it is released to the market. The present review thus evaluates several herbal plants with anti-hyperlipidaemic activities, quality control using chemical markers, and metabolomics application in herbal plants.

OBJECTIVES: Primary Objective • To assess the efficacy of herbal extracts in boosting innate immunity of patients with COVID-19 infection. Secondary Objectives • To assess the efficacy of herbal extracts in restoring respiratory health • To assess the efficacy of Cap. IP in early recovery of patients and decline in viral load • To assess the safety of herbal extracts TRIAL DESIGN: This is a single centre, randomized, 2-arm, parallel group, double blind, 1:1 ratio, controlled, exploratory trial with a study period of 30 days from the day of enrolment. PARTICIPANTS: Patients attending the COVID treatment centre at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital, Nehrunagar, Pimpri, Pune, India were screened for their participation in the study. Patients who were known COVID-19 positive (with positive RT-PCR), eligible and willing were enrolled in the study. INTERVENTION AND COMPARATOR: The intervention in the trial has a background in 'Ayurved'. Intervention Arm: Two capsules, Investigational Product (IP) - 1 - 400mg and Investigational Product - 2 - 450mg, containing herbal extracts (a blend of water and CO(2) extracts) of Shunthi (Zingiber officinale (Ginger), Vidanga (Embelia ribes), Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Aamalaki (Emblica officinalis), Pippali (Piper longum) and calcined Zinc, Shankha bhasma. Placebo Arm: Edible starch ~ 450 mg. The look and feel of IP and of Placebo boxes were very similar. Patients are to take two capsules (one each of IP-1 and IP-2) twice a day for 15 days, and from the 16th day, one capsule of IP-2 twice a day up-to day 30. Capsules are to be administered orally with plain water. The IP is to be taken with all other concomitant medicines prescribed by the treating physician/doctor. Natural products are highly useful as sources of drugs and as tools for fundamental biomedical research. Phytomedicines based on medicinal plants and herbal extracts are used worldwide. Using three examples from our lab, we have shown different approaches to explore the biological and pharmacological properties of herbal extracts and new natural product leads. Our emphasis has been on global effects and multiple rather than single targets, whereby cell- and mechanism-based in vitro assays, in vivo pharmacology, cell biology and transcriptional profiling were employed.

Carica papaya (papaya) leaf extract has been used for a long time in a traditional medicine to treat fever in some infectious diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. The development of science and technology has subsequently made it possible to provide evidence that this plant is not only beneficial as an informal medication, but also that it has scientifically proven pharmacological and toxicological activities, which have led to its formal usage in professional health care systems. The development of formulations for use in nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals has caused this product to be more valuable nowadays. The use of good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards, along with the ease of registering this product facilitated by policies of the national government, will absolutely increase the value of papaya leaf extract as a vital nutraceutical and cosmeceutical products in the near future. In this article, we review the potential of papaya leaf extract to be a high-value commodity in terms of its health effects as well as its industrial benefits.

The four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon markers (PAH4) of benzo[a]anthracene (BaA), chrysene (Chr), benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF), and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) are indicators showing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination levels in Chinese medicine raw materials (CMRMs), extracts and health food products; Samples of herbal medicine, herbal extracts, and food supplements were extracted with n-hexane, then cleaned up sequentially on Florisil and EUPAH solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns. A gas chromatography–mass spectrometry method for the determination of four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon markers in Chinese medicine raw material, extracts, and health food products was established; In spiked-recovery experiments, the average recovery was about 78.6–107.6% with a precision of 2.3–10.5%. The limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) of the PAH4 markers in this method were 2.0 μg/kg and 0.7 μg/kg, respectively. When the developed method was utilized to determine PAH4 contents in 12 locally available health food products, 3 samples contained over 10.0 μg/kg BaP, and 5 samples contained over 50.0 μg/kg PAH4. The European Union (EU) limits for BaP and PAH4 are 10 and 50.0 μg/kg, respectively; therefore, more attention must be drawn to the exposure risk of BaP and PAH4 in CMRMs, their extracts, and health food products. According to the risk assessment based on the Margin of Exposure (MOE) method, it is recognized that the products mentioned in this study pose a low risk.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was envisioned to develop Sunoon Zard a traditional Unani toothpowder into toothpaste form along with its physicochemical standardization and evaluation of anti microbial activity against oral pathogens by in vitro study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Herbal extracts based powder was redesigned to toothpaste as per the Pharmacopoeial guidelines and its pharmaceutical evaluation was conceded as per the Indian Government Tooth Paste Specifications. In vitro study was done to evaluate the antibacterial activity by using agar well diffusion method against dental pathogens. Zone of Inhibition was taken as the end parameter against the test pathogens after appropriate incubation period. It was compared with Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) used as solvent (0.01%) as Negative control whereas Ciprofloxacin 5μg/disk (standard antibiotic for gram positive) and Gentamicin 10μg/disk (standard antibiotic for gram negative) were used as Positive control. All the experiment was done as per the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) Guidelines in triplicates. RESULTS: Sunoon Zard was developed into toothpaste form and its physicochemical values were found to in consonance with the optimum values as mentioned in Bureau of Indian Standard. In vitro study of the Sunoon Zard toothpaste was found to be effective against various dental pathogens with specific sensitivity with good zone of inhibition towards gram negative bacterial strains viz. P.aeruginosa and K.pneuomoniae while among gram positive a significant inhibition was found against C.xerosis and S.viridans. CONCLUSION: The developed toothpaste from classical Unani herbal tooth powder will provide the better patient compliance. Moreover its scientific screening which exhibited potential antibacterial activity in controlling pathogenic oral microflora compared to the standard drugs also revalidated the claim of Unani Physicians that the Sunoon Zard is quite effective in various oro-dental disorders.
