Offers a unique approach to the serious problem of environmental destruction. Watras contends that the problems of environmental destruction derive from misunderstandings in the popular views of democracy. Accordingly, the way to environmental protection lies in correcting those misconceptions by examining the outlooks of three philosophers of education: William Torrey Harris, John Dewey, and Gregory Bateson. William Wade Harris est un prophète africain du Liberia qui annonce dans les années 1913-1914 l'arrivée imminente des « derniers temps ». Il réussit en dix-huit mois à baptiser des milliers d'Ivoiriens et de Ghanéens là où les missionnaires avaient échoué. Cette figure d'exception plus que de subversion illustre toutes les ambivalences du lettré africain, chrétien et « civilisé », instituteur converti aux idées panafricanistes, renouant avec le paganisme de ses pères. Toute son histoire, telle qu'elle s'est construite dans le récit légendaire mais aussi telle que les sources historiographiques récentes la restituent, est faite d'une accumulation de paradoxes et de « synthèses incompatibles » qui s'est révélée pleine de promesses pour le peuple noir.

During his brief yet remarkable career, abolitionist Charles Torrey -- called the "father of the Underground Railroad" by his peers -- assisted almost four hundred slaves in gaining their freedom. A Yale graduate and an ordained minister, Torrey set up a well-organized route for escaped slaves traveling from Washington and Baltimore to Philadelphia and Albany. Arrested in Baltimore in 1844 for his activities, Torrey spent two years in prison before he succumbed to tuberculosis. By then, other abolitionists widely recognized and celebrated Torrey's exploits: running wagonloads of slaves northward in the night, dodging slave catchers and sheriffs, and involving members of Congress in his schemes. Nonetheless, the historiography of abolitionism has largely overlooked Torrey's fascinating and compelling story. The Martyrdom of Abolitionist Charles Torrey presents the first comprehensive biography of one of America's most dedicated abolitionists. According to author E. Fuller Torrey, a distant relative, Charles Torrey pushed the abolitionist movement to become more political and active. He helped advance the faction that challenged the leadership of William Lloyd Garrison, provoking an irreversible schism in the movement and making Torrey and Garrison bitter enemies. Torrey played an important role in the formation of the Liberty Party and in the emergence of political abolitionism. Not satisfied with the slow pace of change, he also pioneered aggressive abolitionism by personally freeing slaves, likely liberating more than any other person. In doing so, he inspired many others, including John Brown, who cited Torrey as one of his role models. E. It is forty years since the Torrey Canyon oil-tanker disaster of March/April 1967. The unprecedented scale of the pollution and its impact on the Cornish coast is commonly perceived as an important trigger to the environmental movement of the 1970s. The article focuses on the political response to the immediate stranding and destruction of the tanker, the pollution of the beaches, the legal and scientific advice tendered, and the longer-term repercussions for 'the machinery of government'. If not a trigger, such exposure to public criticism accelerated the incremental pace by which ministers and their officials responded to the increasing significance being given to pollution issues.
