Das Puppentheater in Halle/Saale feiert in diesem Jahr seinen 70. Geburtstag, dafür wurde die Stadt in eine Bühne verwandelt. Mit einem zweitägigen Eröffnungsspektakel auf dem Marktplatz und einer 18 Meter großen Gulliver-Puppe, begleitet von Schauspiel und Musik, wurde die Festwoche zum Jubiläum eröffnet.

This project outlines both the differences and similarities between Swift's novel, its 1996 film adaptation, and Homer's masterpiece, The Odyssey. On the one hand, the classical tradition provides the foundation for reception studies, which are essentially concerned with the democratic metaphor. These studies are very relevant since they have made it possible to identify the intertext of the aforementioned adaptation. For its part, film studies emphasize the important role that this adaptation (as well as many others) plays from an educational point of view. On the other hand, the similarities between Gulliver and Odysseus are successfully traced, thus reaching the purpose of this project. To summarise, both characters have been shipwrecked several times and they have spent a long time away from their families and homelands. In addition, they discovered all kinds of unknown lands and people during their unfortunate travels. They also managed to survive when their companions passed away. And, finally, they had to reclaim the place that was rightfully theirs. It can be said that director Charles Sturridge chose the Homeric character, Odysseus, to remake an already brilliant work. To do so, he had to be the receiver of both classical works.

Julia Gulliver As Philosopher

This article introduces a little-known woman philosopher, Julia Gulliver, from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Fottowing a biographical sketch, the article discusses four illustrations of Gulliver's philosophical work. These illustrations deal with freedom and determinism, philosophy of religion, democracy, and philosophy of education. A concluding estimate of Gulliver's legacy suggests that her significance lies mainly in her applied philosophy and in her leadership as a philosophically-minded educator.
Gulliver project: performers and visitors
This paper discusses two projects in our research environment. The Gulliver project, an ambitious project conceived by some artists connected to our research efforts, and the Aveiro-project, as well ambitious, but with goals that can be achieved beause of technological developments, rather than be dependent on artistic and 'political' (read: financial) sources. Both projects are on virtual and augmented reality. The main goal is to design inhabited environments, where 'inhabited' refers to autonomous agents and agents that represent humans, realtime or off-line, visiting the virtual environment and interacting with other agents. The Gulliver environment has been designed by two artists: Matjaz Stuk and Alena Hudcovicova. The Aveiro project is a research effort of a group of researchers trying to design models of intelligence and interaction underlying the behavior of (groups of) agents inhabiting virtual worlds. In this paper we survey the current state of both projects and we discuss current and future attempts to have music performances by virtual and real performers in these environments.
