AbstractObjectiveThe aim of this study is to examine how situational abortion attitudes differ when including additional context related to the gestational age of the pregnancy.MethodOrdinary Least Squares Regression models predicting abortion attitudes across four different sets of abortion attitude questions, using data collected from an online panel weighted to match U.S. benchmarks.ResultsLater gestational ages are associated with less support for abortion. Although there is some variation in the amount that support decreases across different socio‐demographic groups, the predictors of abortion attitudes remain relatively stable across gestational ages. Abortion attitudes questions with no reference to weeks' gestation appear to be the most similar to questions referencing early weeks' gestation.ConclusionWhen answering abortion attitude questions that do not include any reference to weeks' gestation, respondents may be more likely to think about abortion early in pregnancy. Including references to weeks' gestation may provide a more nuanced and complete understanding of abortion attitudes.

SummaryUsing routinely collected data for 184,000 Scottish singleton live births in 1980–82, nine maternal factors were related to changes in the distribution of birthweight for given gestational age. Maternal height and marital status were associated with overall shifts in the distribution. In contrast, social class, a previous perinatal death or two or more previous spontaneous abortions in multiparae were primarily associated with increased risk of a small-for-gestational-age infant. A history of caesarean section or three or more previous live births was associated with increased risk of a large-for-gestational-age infant. The results of this population study were generally consistent with reported hospital-based findings.

AbstractIn the U.S., approximately 11% of infants are born small for gestational age (SGA). While there are many known behavioral risk factors for SGA births, there are still many factors yet to be explored. The purpose of this study was to investigate the maternal early menarche (< 12 years old)- SGA birth association. Data were retrieved from the 2011-2017 National Survey of Family Growth, and multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the association. Approximately 4% of mothers reported having an SGA infant and 24% of mothers reported early age at menarche. After controlling for maternal age, race/ethnicity, and annual household income, early menarche was associated with 3% increased odds of SGA, although this finding was not statistically significant (adjusted odds ratio: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.70, 1.53). Additional research is needed on the long-term birth outcomes and health consequences of early menarche.

Background: Commonly fetal parameter for gestational age (GA) assessment have pitfall mostly in progressive pregnancy and pregnancy complicated by fetal structure abnormality. Objective: Correlating of gestational age in the second and third trimesters with umbilical cord diameter. Methods: A cross-sectional sonographic study of 370 pregnant women with gestational age from 14 weeks to 40 weeks was done in Government Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Kahn a nau Lahore, Ferozpur Road, Lahore. The gestational age was first estimated using Naegele's GA estimation formula based on the starting date of the last menstrual period of each subject. Fetal parameters like biparietal diameter, femur length, circumference of the head and abdominal circumference have been used to estimate gestational age. The umbilical cord diameter has been measured to find a correlation between gestation age and umbilical cord diameter. Results: The fetal parameters and umbilical cord diameter increase in the fetus as the gestational age increases. There seems to be a linear relationship and significant statistical correlation (p<0.05) in between umbilical cord diameter and the gestational age estimation. The umbilical cord diameter appeared to increase by the rate of 1mm/week between 14TH to 40TH weeks of the gestational period. Conclusions: The umbilical cord diameter has a strong linear relationship with commonly used parameters for the assessment of fetal gestational age and is able to use as a reliable method to evaluate fetal growth as well as prediction of gestational age.

The slaughter of pregnant cattle raises ethical–moral questions with regard to animal welfare, but also concerns of consumers because of higher levels of sex steroids in the meat from pregnant cattle. Since no data on the slaughter of pregnant cattle in Austria were available, we examined uteri of slaughtered female cattle in one Austrian mid-size abattoir. Sample size was calculated for an assumed prevalence of 2.5% (±1% ; 95% confidence interval) of cows or heifers slaughtered in the last trimester of pregnancy and amounted to 870 cows and 744 heifers. 1633 female cattle of domestic origin were examined, most of them of dual-purpose type. Pregnancy was detected in 30/759 heifers and in 74/874 cows (an overall prevalence of 6.4%). The number of cattle in the last trimester of pregnancy was 16 to 26, depending on the evaluation scheme. We found no significant differences in percentages of pregnant cattle sent to slaughter for beef, dual-purpose and dairy breeds, although the latter group demonstrated the lowest percentage. Our results are comparable with those from previously conducted studies in other member states of the European Union. Measures to avoid sending pregnant cattle to slaughter should be implemented at farm-level.

Objective:To evaluate the perinatal outcome of intrauterine growth-restricted preterm twins and contribution of prematurity to morbidity and mortality.Study design:A case–control study of 211 preterm twins: 108 growth-restricted twins matched with 103 normal growth twins of the same gestational age. Mortality and morbidity rates were compared between groups.Result:Fetal and overall perinatal mortality rates of growth-restricted fetuses were higher than normal growth ones. Respiratory distress syndrome incidence was lower and neurologic sequelae incidence higher in growth-restricted twins. No differences were observed between groups with respect to neonatal mortality, low Apgar score, neonatal intensive care unit admission, periventricular hemorrhage, sepsis, jaundice, and hematologic or metabolic disorders.Conclusion:Adverse perinatal outcomes of preterm twins complicated with intrauterine growth restriction are represented by a higher antepartum mortality rate, but once born alive, neonatal outcomes seem to be associated only with gestational age at birth, excluding a protective effect on lung maturation and a higher risk of long-term neurologic sequelae.
