Participatory research approaches in which participants are placed at the center of the research have been successfully used to facilitate research engagement and open expression. In this article we describe our experiences of using a novel, hybrid participatory methodology called expression sessions (ES) with adolescents. We specifically explain how the ES method was conceptualized and operationalized and offer reflections on the usefulness of this approach. Our study was implemented through 24 focus group discussions with 144 adolescent participants aged 12-17 years old. We found the ES method valuable to encourage active participation, facilitate open and meaningful expressions, and enhance collaborative reflection. Through the ES approach participants had the freedom to choose their most proficient ways of expression, which facilitated reflection and discussion of issues in new meaningful ways. In this article thus we present an alternative, participatory methodology that can easily be adopted by qualitative researchers and with diverse samples.

Conventional diagnostics could benefit greatly from the high-throughput genomics technologies that have arisen over the past 10 years in basic research. Whether it is for DNA analysis (CGH arrays, SNP analysis) or RNA analysis (gene-expression arrays), information at the molecular level would undoubtedly improve the accuracy of diagnoses and prognoses. In the past 3 years, several efforts have been made to standardize assays, experimental procedures, and data processing, and governmental institutions such as the FDA, microarray manufacturers, and the scientific community have worked diligently to bring genomics into daily medicine. This talk will review the recent developments in molecular classification, prognostication, and treatments.

Cette édition spéciale aborde les enjeux actuels de la mise en œuvre de la Convention sur la diversité des expressions culturelles (CDEC) à travers une analyse des questions discutées lors de la 8ème session du Comité intergouvernemental de la CDEC. À cet égard, nous revenons dans un premier temps sur l'impact normatif de la CDEC et sur la question des rapports périodiques des Parties à la CDEC. Dans un deuxième temps, nous traitons du débat autour de la mise en œuvre du Fonds international pour la diversité culturelle et des articles 16 (Traitement préférentiel) et 21 (Concertation et coordination internationales), ainsi que de la question de l'adaptation de la CDEC aux défis des technologies numériques. Les interventions des participants lors de la session du Comité et le caractère du débat nous révèlent le retour du politique dans la CDEC, à savoir que l'étape actuelle de sa mise en œuvre implique nécessairement des divergences et des conflits politiques, vu l'importance économique, sociale et culturelle des questions traitées. Un tableau récapitulatif des principaux événements qui ont marqué 2014 vient compléter ce tour d'horizon.

Exhibitions have the potential to affect the lives of visitors and the artists themselves. This article considers the potential influence of exhibitions as a culminating factor in creative arts therapy experiences for young adults with autism. It explores the therapeutic potential of using the gallery as a space for change as well as to enhance socially inclusive experiences for the participating artists. Findings from this study suggest that participating in an exhibition as a final component of creative arts therapy sessions may enhance the therapeutic benefits for client-artists with autism and may influence the perception of visitors.

La fête sportive se distingue des autres fêtes juvéniles, par son occurrence après (ou pendant) un affrontement, par la sortie de l'espace familial, par la présence d'adultes (parfois initiateurs) et par un degré d'incertitude important quand aux rencontres possibles. Elle permet aux jeunes de construire leurs identités en marquant tout à la fois le rapport de générations et le rapport à l'autre sexe. Le but de cet article est d'étudier sur un mode ethnologique, deux formes de sociabilité festive, en apparence très éloignées, "la troisième mitemps" en Rugby, et la "Sunset session" en Surf. Par delà leurs différences, ces fêtes montrent, à l'analyse, de fortes similitudes.

Drama can be used as a tool for helping blind children to express feelings and fantasies about their visual impairment. Excerpts from sessions conducted with one child are used in this article to illustrate the role of drama therapy in the dynamic process of identifying and working through feelings about visual loss, and opening the way for self-acceptance.

This study integrated the research streams of computer-mediated communication (CMC) and group conflict by comparing the expression of different types of conflict in CMC groups and face-to-face (FTF) groups over time. The main aim of the study was to compare the cues-filtered-out approach against the social information processing theory. A laboratory study was conducted with 39 groups (19 CMC and 20 FTF) in which members were required to work together over three sessions. The frequencies of task, process, and relationship conflict were analyzed. Findings supported the social information processing theory. There was more process and relationship conflict in CMC groups compared to FTF groups on Day 1. However, this difference disappeared on Days 2 and 3. There was no difference between CMC and FTF groups in the amount of task conflict expressed on any day.

AbstractThis study examined children's (N = 79; 9–10 years) and adolescents' (N = 82; 15–16 years) ability to regulate their emotion expressions of anxiety as they completed a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test for Children (TSST‐C). Approximately half in each age group were internationally adopted from institutional care (N = 79) and half were non‐adopted, age‐matched peers (N = 82). Institutional care was viewed as a form of early life stress. Coders who were reliable and blind to group status watched videos of the session to assess anxiety expressions using the Child and Adolescent Stress and Emotion Scale developed for this study. Children exhibited more expressions of anxiety than adolescents, and youth adopted from institutions showed more expressions of anxiety than their non‐adopted counterparts. The role of early life stress on observed anxiety expressions remained significant after controlling for differences in age, physiological stress responses measured through salivary cortisol reactivity, and self‐reports of stress during the TSST‐C. This suggests possible deficits in the regulation of expressive behavior for youth with early life stress histories, which cannot be explained by experiencing the task as more stressful.

Body expression and dance are activities that contribute to the integral well-being of people. In an educational context, the process of evaluating our students implies variations in their moods. This study tackles the states of mind that students perceive before and after the evaluation of a practice in the subject of Body expression and dance, developed through choreographies, that were, previously rehearsed, and later presented to the rest of the class in a specific session. Our main interest was the obtention of information on the states of mind of the students prior to the evaluation of their choreographies (cooperative task), and again once they had been performed. The study design consisted of two phases: two different choreographies separated by an interval of 2 months. The students were asked about their moods before and after performing their choreographies, which were evaluated. The participants, 167 in total, 35 women (20.5%) and 132 men (79.5%), aged 18 to 22 years old, filled out a POMS (Profile of Mood States) questionnaire, before and after the evaluation of each occasion. Differences were found in the stress-anxiety, vigor-activity, fatigue-immobility scales and the total mood score (PGMS). In all of them, except for the fatigue-immobility scale, we found a decrease in scores after the performance, compared to scores before. For the Stress-Anxiety factor, lower values were observed in the post-tests in comparison to the pre-tests, and also lower values in the pre- and post-test scores regarding the second choreography. Bibliography: leaves 195-200. ; Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome of diffuse pain associated with non-restorative sleep, fatigue, numerous tender points, depression and other conditions that often does not respond well to treatment posing a dilemma to health professionals. The aim of this study was to explore expressions of abandonment and rejection that emerged from group therapy with eleven fibromyalgia patients at the former Princess Alice Orthopaedic Hospital, Cape Town. It focused on abandonment/rejection by caregivers during childhood, death as a form of abandonment, abandonment/rejection in adulthood by family, spouse and family-in-law, by friends, colleagues and employers, by government and society, the hospital and doctors, and by fellow group members and the facilitator. The study is exploratory, interpretative and explanatory in nature with a purposive non-probability sample. The qualitative research method was used to gain insight into the subjective experiences of the lives and illness of the participants. The method of data collection was mainly the tape recorded and transcribed words of the participants over thirty-three group therapy sessions in eleven months and observations by the researcher as full participant observer. The data was sorted and analysed into emerging themes, patterns and categories. All participants had had repetitive experiences of abandonment/rejection, which they had denied, suppressed and avoided, as it was too painful. Due to a lack of inner and external resources, or any intervention, feelings of abandonment, fear and anger were internalized as an unresolved reservoir of emotional pain. This seemed to have escalated into an eventual expression of physical pain (somatisation). From the findings of this study, there appears to be a relationship between adverse psychosocial factors and stress, particularly experiences of abandonment/rejection and fibromyalgia. However, due to the qualitative nature and small sample, the findings cannot be extrapolated and generalized to the broader population of fibromyalgia patients, and quantitative studies are needed for verification.

There has been much discussion about the ideological or political underpinnings of toponyms, e.g., Faraco and Murphy (1997) on Spain, Cohen and Kliot (1992) on the Israeli administered territories, Nash (1999) on the Irish Republic or Yeo (1992, 1996) on Singapore. The Israeli, Irish and Singaporean examples are different from the Spanish one in that the struggle is also expressed linguistically through the form of the names chosen. Yeo (1996) notes the preference for street names based on the Malay language in the 1960s as an expression of Singaporean political independence. In this paper, I examine the names given to residential buildings (condominiums) in Singapore: what kinds of names are used and the reasons for any patterns discerned. While street names are usually tightly controlled by municipal boards, building names are usually given freer rein, although they would still need governmental approval. Building names would therefore reflect the attitudes of the commercially powerful rather than those of the politically powerful. In the context of the Singaporean state ideology of multilingualism (Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin Chinese and Tamil) and multiracialism (and therefore multiculturalism), it might therefore be expected that the multilingual nature of the community might also be expressed in the building names accorded. The official languages are clearly not equal based on their degree of representation. Also of note is the presence of languages such as French and Spanish which do not form a part of the normal linguistic repertoire of a Singaporean.

When a group has to make a decision, one can assume that the members' incentives to state their position vary according to the different decision rules. Decision-making in the Council of the European Union offers an opportunity to study how a decision rule influences the way members of a group state their position. Indeed, in several areas, decisions must be made by qualified-majority voting. But the combination of this rule and of social norms specific to the Council discourages the minority from expressing itself at different stages of decision-making. Decisions seem to be made without opposition at two main stages of the decision-making process: during the plenary sessions, representatives do not vote; according to the official Council records, a high proportion of measures are adopted without opposition.
