"Incest denial and sexual assaults disrupt a young woman's solo spiritual quest and her two romantic adventures in India in 1990-91. Two decades later, after profound healing, she's resilient at mid-life. Finding the love and intimacy she craves, she can, at last, forgive her dying father--and her mom, for her decades of silence. Unlike many stories of healing and spiritual discovery, No Letter in Your Pocket avoids predictable recovery rhetoric and insular victimhood. Instead, it is a testament to thriving empowerment."--
; The purpose of this thesis is to explore and analyze the psychosocial needs felt by 6 men as a result of sexual assault suffered during childhood and/or adolescence and/or adulthood. The objective is to answer the following research question: what are the psychosocial needs expressed by men who are victims of sexual abuse? Semi-structured interviews allow participants to speak in order to explore in depth their psychosocial needs following sexual abuse. Two categories of need are at the center of the study: the first category relates to a need to learn to live with the traumas caused by sexual abuse and a need to seek and find help. The second category being support needs, in particular support needs from health professionals to reduce the psychological and sexological consequences of sexual abuse, support needs from organizations specifically helping men who are victims of sexual assault, family and social support needs following disclosure of the sexual abuse experience, support needs from employers in order to facilitate a recovery process, socio-legal support needs to initiate a legal process against one's aggressor(s) and societal support needs to highlight the political and social issues surrounding the problem of male sexual assault. Finally, recommendations are formulated in connection with the discourse conveyed by society regarding the problem of male sexual assault, the reform of the legal system in matters of sexual assault, the financial support of organizations specifically helping men who are victims of sexual assault, the training of health professionals to deal with the problem of male sexual abuse and future research avenues.

What is memory, and where is it stored in the body? Can a room be symbolic of a lifetime? Memories are like layers of your skin or layers of paint on a canvas. In The Queen of Peace Room, Magie Dominic peels away these layers as she explores her life, that of a Newfoundlander turned New Yorker, an artist and a writer -- and frees herself from the memories of her violent past. On an eight-day retreat with Catholic nuns in a remote location safe from the outside world, she exposes, and captures, fifty years of violent memories and weaves them into a tapestry of unforgettable images. "The brave retelling of the aftermath of reporting sexual assault in a small community. It's the antithesis of why a wedding should be memorable. In 1992, at a sister's nuptials, Besel's family members discovered that their father, Jock Tod, had molested their younger sister. As more survivors came forward, the family realized that their father had sexually assaulted four of the six sisters in a family of eleven children, and had been doing so for years. Despite there being enough evidence to charge their father, the trial and prosecution rocked Besel's family and deeply divided their small rural community. The Unravelling is a brave, riveting telling of the destruction caused by sexual assault, and the physical, psychological, emotional, financial, and legal tolls survivors often shoulder. Donna Besel offers an honest portrayal of the years-long process, from disclosure to prosecution, that offers readers greater insight into the challenges victims of sexual assault face and the remarkable strength and resilience required to obtain some measure of justice. Praise for The Unravelling 'Donna Besel's battle for acknowledgment of the evils that infected her childhood is illumined in The Unravelling by the sheer strength of her lucid, straightforward, voice. Besel carries us along an eye-opening journey, one of healing and remarkable endurance.'--Harriet Richards, author of Waiting for the Piano Tuner to Die"--

This gutsy, immensely readable memoir traces the influence of the author's mother tongue in the formation of her identity, and the role her second language played in providing a psychological sanctuary. The author recounts the emotional gains and losses of a life lived in two languages and the changing role of the Catholic Church.
Annotation Don't Tell examines the effects of sexual abuse on the emotional and sexual life of men, including their sense of self and their personal relationships. Using the first-hand accounts of victims Dorais shows that certain reactions are specific to male victims of abuse as they attempt to preserve a sense of physical integrity and masculinity. He also provides innovative strategies for both prevention and treatment that will be of use to those who have suffered abuse as well as to their families and all those who are trying to help them - spouses, friends, social workers, and therapists.
"Why does God hate me?" "How can I believe in a God who has allowed my suffering?" These are just two of the difficult spiritual questions that survivors of child sexual abuse struggle with. In addition, survivors often have mixed feelings about the church because of perceived judgment and indifference, their own shame, or their discomfort with certain aspects of worship. Of the many aftereffects of sexual abuse, spiritual wounds are the least talked about, yet they are central to adult survivors who seek to heal and find faith and meaning in their lives. With grace and gentleness, this book seeks to answer survivors' spiritual questions and address some of the common misconceptions that often develop when young victims attempt to understand what has happened to them. It explores the origins of their spiritual issues with clear psychological insights and guides survivors on a spiritual journey toward healing, wholeness, and a deeper relationship with God."--
