Malta is a developing micro-state with no natural mineral resources. Apart from the sun and the sea, it depends on the resourcefulness and productivity of its labour force for economic survival. The predicament of small island economies is significantly shaped by developments elsewhere AII the more so when the external agency is none other than the largest economic block in the world today . The European Union (EU) is now a pan-national organization of 15 countries, with various other European States hopeful of future membership. On its Mediterranean peak lie two small but sovereign islands already with substantial levels of trade with the EU, Cyprus and Malta. As if to confirm a basis of commonality both submitted application to join the EU in July 1990. It appears that the main decision has already been taken: The European Union has already decided to accept Malta and Cyprus within the fold. Negotiations with the EU are likely to start after June 1997 and it is expected that the two countries will join the European Union by the year 2000. ; peer-reviewed

Malta is experiencing a strong economic growth which is attracting increasing numbers of foreign workers. This study investigates the working conditions experienced by Filipinos in Malta, the largest group of migrants from outside the European Union. Survey data collected from a sample of 317 Filipino workers was compared to the results of the Sixth European Working Conditions Survey. While most respondents experience positive work outcomes, a significant minority grapples with negative conditions and perceptions. Overall, the Filipino respondents in Malta appear to face more difficult working conditions than other migrants in Europe. Nearly half of the respondents report that their health or safety is at risk because of their work and over a fourth suffered from discrimination during the year leading to the research. A substantial minority of Filipinos work below their skill levels and more than 40 hours per week. About a third of the respondents are not satisfied with their working conditions, claim not to be treated fairly at work and do not find sufficient help and support from their managers and colleagues. This study indicates the need to take into consideration the realities of both the home and host countries when analyzing the working situation of migrants. It highlights the employment vulnerability of migrant Filipino workers in Malta, and points to an apparent structural deficiency in the Maltese society to protect them. ; peer-reviewed

This paper will analyze the perceptions of unemployed members of the labour force aged 40 years and over in Malta vis-à-vis their chances to find stable employment. The paper shall include an overview of socio-economic development and social policy in Malta, and it shall present various sociological concepts in relation to the issue at stake, including post-Fordism; knowledge society; ageism; social capital; and discouragement. Through the theories of overdetermination and multiple identities, it shall be argued that ageing unemployed workers are a distinct non-homogenous social group Malta is a micro-state member of the European Union (E.U.). Its recent membership in the E.U. (2004) with the consequent implementation of the principles of the Lisbon Strategy give the ideal setting for this analysis. In view of this, this paper presents results of research conducted on a sample of 40+ unemployed workers undergoing a specialized E.U. co-sponsored training and employment scheme. Therefore, by means of theory and research we attempt to present an analysis of the contemporary transitional situation as well as its social policy implications. ; non peer-reviewed
