The experimental 'learning‐to‐forecast' literature finds that subjects use simple linear backward‐looking models when forecasting in environments with little to no inout the economic framework. We study the formation of expectations in a laboratory economy of monopolistic firms and labour unions with almost complete knowledge of the model. We observe simple backward‐looking rules, but also a considerable share of model‐based expectations using information on the economic structure. At least for some subjects, expectations are informed by theory. As in the previous literature, we find individual prediction rules to be heterogeneous.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic and often progressive disease of the wall of the arterial vasculature. The term atherosclerosis is derived from the Greek words "athero" meaning gruel or paste and "skleros" meaning stiff or hard. Atherosclerosis is considered a major clinical problem, which underlies most ischemic events of both the heart as well as the brain. It is the result of the Western lifestyle and can start very early in life even in persons without a strong genetic disposition like untreated familial hypercholesteremia. From the second decade onwards, the disease progresses more rapidly. The clinical silence of atherosclerosis is often broken between the 3rd and 5th decade, when patients present with ischemic complaints of e.g. heart and brain. Despite the continuing decrease in cardiovascular disease (CVD) associated death over the last decade, it still is one of the main causes of death in The Netherlands, accounting for 30,7% of total deaths in 2007. As a result, the socio-economic consequences remain huge. It has been estimated that in the European Union annual CVD-associated costs are €169 billion, of which €105 billion are costs directly related to healthcare. Historically, atherosclerosis was simply considered as an accumulation of lipids in the vascular wall. In the l

Exposure of military and civilian populations to inhaled toxic chemicals can take place as a result of deliberate release (warfare, terrorism) or following accidental releases from industrial concerns or transported chemicals. Exposure to inhaled toxic chemicals can result in an acute lung injury, and in severe cases acute respiratory distress syndrome, for which there is currently no specific medical therapy, treatment remaining largely supportive. This treatment often requires intensive care facilities that may become overwhelmed in mass casualty events and may be of limited benefit in severe cases. There remains, therefore, a need for evidence-based treatment to inform both military and civilian medical response teams on the most appropriate treatment for chemically induced lung injury. This article reviews data used to derive potential clinical management strategies for chemically induced lung injury.
