AbstractOnce a data base that appears suitable is located, considerable work must still be done to make it ready for analysis. In particular, one must learn as much as possible about the data elements. To illustrate the importance of this point, the HEGIS data base and its uses are discussed in detail.

Institutions of higher education have an important responsibility to support knowledge-driven economic growth strategies. This paper investigates the strategies of how by applying technologies on a large scale—with close attention to quality—virtual education can help higher education to find a way through the crisis of access, prohibitive cost, and lack of flexibility that we find all over the developing world. By addressing various issues related to planning, implementation, and quality with proper strategies, virtual education can provide immense opportunity to reduce the North-South knowledge gap and also to promote the development of the developing world. This paper reviews various issues related to promotion and quality control in virtual higher education and addresses possible strategies with general considerations of Africa and Asia.

In response to the many pressures facing public higher education, public universities are experimenting with business-oriented practices that seem likely to alter their nature and purposes. In this paper, we examine several hybrid experiments—new organizational strategies intended deliberately, sometimes explicitly, to hybridize the traditional norms and practices associated with academia and business at one emblematic public university. These cases illustrate how each hybrid experiment is a tacit response to existing norms and strategies that govern the university–business boundary, initiated as a hedge against the challenging fiscal and political climate. Taken together, they do not lead to a unitary and/or linear spread of business codes and practices. Instead, what some have referred to as "business logic" appears multifaceted, having many elements that are deployed, institutionalized, and perceived differently in different contexts, even within a single university.
In der angelsächsischen analytischen Erziehungsphilosophie wurde ein Konzept allgemeiner Bildung (Liberal education) herausgearbeitet, das den Bildungsanspruch in wissenstheoretischem Rekurs argumentativ zu legitimieren und zu begründen versucht. Dabei geht sie von einem differenzierten Erfahrungs- und Wissensfeld aus, das an öffentliche Standards der Verständigung gebunden ist. Diese Theorie wird an zwei ausgewählten Beispielen geprüft: Einerseits an den US-amerikanischen Debatten um die "cultural literacy" und andererseits an den Auseinandersetzungen um die Einführung des "National Curriculum" in England und Wales. Abschließend wird der Zusammenhang einer wissenstheoretisch fundierten Theorie der Liberal education mit bestimmten politischen Optionen diskutiert. Dabei wird sich zeigen, daß hinsichtlich politischer Zuordnungen dieser Theorie keine systematische Notwendigkeit besteht, und daß das Konzept einer integrierenden Allgemeinbildung in demokratischen, sozialen Staaten unverzichtbar und gleichzeitig nicht beliebig multikulturell ausrichtbar ist. (DIPF/Orig.) ; In the Anglo-Saxon analytical philosophy of education a concept of liberal education has been conceived which aims at an argumentative legitimation and foundation of the claim to educate by drawing on the theory of knowledge. In this, it proceeds from a dilferentiated field of experience and knowledge which is bound to public Standards of communication. This theory ist examined on the basis of two examples: the American debate on cultural literacy, on the one hand, and the conflict concerning the introduction of the National Curriculum in England and Wales, on the other. In a final part, the author discusses the relation of a knowledge-theoretically grounded theory of liberal education with certain political options. In this, it will be shown that there is no systematic need to politically classify this theory and that the concept of an integrative general education is absolutely required in demoeratie, social states, yet cannot be adapted to every possible cultural orientation. Economic education has emerged as an important subfield in economics over the last several decades. This paper explores the author gender breakdown found in economic education journals compared to top-tier, general-interest economics journals and some field journals. We find that from 2009 to 2019, the percentage of articles published by women in general interest and selected field journals has remained relatively constant, while female publications in economic education journals have grown to match the percentage of women in the discipline.
