OBJECTIVE: This study updates Haaland's 1999 dental hygiene mapping study. By identifying core journals and estimating database coverage, it characterizes changes in dental hygiene research and aids librarians in collection development and user education. METHOD: Cited references from a three-year (2015–2017) sample of core dental hygiene journals were collected, categorized into five formats, and analyzed by format and publication year according to Bradford's Law of Scattering. CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE, and EMBASE were surveyed to determine the indexing coverage of cited journals. RESULTS: The number of cited journal titles increased from 389 in 1999 to 1,675 in 2018. Core Zone 1 titles increased from 5 to 11. Journal article citations increased from 69.5% of all citations in 1999 to 78.4% in the present study, whereas book citations decreased from 18.1% to 5.1%. A newly added category, "Internet sources," accounted for 8.4% of citations. Overall, 68.6% of citations were 10 years or younger versus 71.4% in 1999. Most Zone 1 and Zone 2 journals were specific to dentistry or dental hygiene. CONCLUSION: Notable changes since 1999 were an increased volume of literature and a shift from print to online sources, reflecting improved accessibility of the literature and greater Internet use. From 1999 to 2018, citations to journal articles increased, books decreased, websites appeared, and government publications increased slightly. These findings indicate that dental hygiene research is growing and that indexing coverage for this field has improved dramatically in the past two decades.

ABSTRACTTo assess the status of geriatric education in dental hygiene curricula, a pretested survey was sent to a 55% random sample of the 198 US dental hygiene programs. Of the 109 surveys mailed, a 90% response rate showed that geriatric didactic material is most frequently presented via occasional lectures, rather than in a formal course or an organized series of presentations. Seventy‐five percent of the programs have a geriatric clinical component. Baccalaureate programs and programs longer than 2 years are more likely than associate programs and programs shorter than 2 years, respectively, to teach geriatrics in a more formalized setting. There is no significant difference in the way geriatric material is presented between hygiene programs that are and are not within dental schools.

ABSTRACTThe Periodontol Treatment Needs System (PTNS) was used to classify needs of 102 patients, 97 males and five females, at the VAMC Dental Service. The PTNS is based on the presence or absence of plaque, calculus or overhangs, inflammation, and pocket depth. In addition, need for restorative and prosthetic care was added to the PTNS based on dentists' diagnosis. All classification was done by quadrant.All subjects required dental hygiene or periodontal care; 45% of the subjects need restorative treatment, prosthetic treatment, or both. Differences in numbers of patients requiring each type of treatment were highly significant. Multiple regression showed that age was positively related to type of treatment needed, with a significant difference in dental hygiene or periodontal needs by quadrant.The results of this study show greater need for dental hygiene and periodontal treatment than for dental treatment in these patients.

Les idées issues des rapports sociaux entre les sexes et particulièrement du féminisme y ont occupé une place centrale.This paper explores the influence of gender and feminism on the professional projects of female‐dominated professions, through a case study of dental hygiene in Ontario. Full professional status has eluded many female‐dominated professions, including dental hygiene. Historically, dental hygiene was defined as work for women, to be performed strictly under the control of male dentists. In recent years, dental hygiene has pursued a professional project and struggled for greater independence from dentistry. Ideas about gender and, particularly, feminism have been central to their professional project.

When mass fatality incidents (MFIs) occur, they can quickly overwhelm local, state, and government agencies, resources, and personnel. It is important to have a rapid and effective response with skilled, multidisciplinary victim identification teams since specific skill sets are necessary to participate in mass fatality preparedness and response. The aims of this study were to determine the extent of formal education related to mass fatality preparedness and response training in U.S. dental hygiene programs and to assess program directors' perceptions of the need for such training. A 23-item cross-sectional survey was emailed to 319 U.S. dental hygiene programs in 2015. Survey questions addressed if the program offered mass fatality preparedness and response training to its students and how much training was given, as well as collecting respondents' demographics and opinions regarding education and training. An overall response rate of 36% was obtained, with 111 program chairs completing the survey. The results showed that only a small percentage of responding programs incorporated coursework related to mass fatality and preparedness in their curricula. Of the responding programs, 84% had no formal instruction on the role of a dental hygienist in MFIs; however, 53 of 69 program directors agreed or strongly agreed that the role of dental hygienists in MFIs should be covered in dental hygiene curricula. The top three barriers to incorporating such training reported by respondents were time requirements, lack of faculty expertise, and lack of equipment. Future research is needed to establish standardized competencies for mass fatality preparedness and response in dental hygiene education.

Der Artikel liefert eine Einschätzung der Wissenschaftsdisziplin "Internationale Beziehungen" aus der Sicht der Wirtschaftswissenschaften + Ein wesentlicher Unterschied zwischen beiden Disziplinen besteht dabei in der unterschiedlich engen Verzahnung von theoretischer und empirischer Arbeit. Die Stärke der Wirtschaftswissenschaften wird in dem sich ergänzendem Charakter von theoretischer und empirischer Arbeit gesehen. In den Internationalen Beziehungen besteht ein vergleichsweise loser Zusammenhang. In Folge dessen gibt es in den Internationalen Beziehungen keinen Kernbestand an allgemeinen theoretischen Grundannahmen und keine allgemein akzeptierten empirischen Techniken. (SWP-Clv)

This article adopts economics as a perspective from which to view recent research in international relations. The most telling difference between international relations and economics, it argues, is in the connection between theory and empirical work. The strength of economics is the complementary and mutually supporting character of theoretical and empirical work. In international relations, in contrast, the connections between theory and empirics are looser. As a consequence, research in international relations has not converged to a core of common theoretical assumptions and an arsenal of commonly accepted empirical techniques.

AbstractDental hygiene has been a female‐dominated profession that worked primarily for dentists who, until very recently, were usually male. This article explores the early history of dental hygiene in Canada during the 1950s and 1960s; its explosive growth in the 1970s; the influence of feminism on the profession; and the battles dental hygienists fought to improve the status of their profession including better educational opportunities; professional self‐regulation and the right to practice independently of dentists. It argues that dental hygienists have made important gains, and yet the culture of 'caring' continues to complicate their professional status.
