In this essay, the discussion proceeds from the public image of the functionary at the end of the Rákosi era, through the Kádárist policies of 'new sobriety' disciplining the functionary in order not to irritate and provoke the rest of society, to the new contrat sociale established by the mid-1960s in which the party-state apparatus class and the commoners join one another in pursuing shared (consumerist) ideas of good life and happiness, within the constraints and coping with the conditions of demand side abundance (the tension between consumerist aspirations, desires and an economy of sustained shortages). The article draws on archival sources as well as texts from contemporary cabarets and an analysis of the 1964 feature film, Don't Waste the Gas!, and its manuscript.

Demand-side innovation policies have been receiving increasing interest from a number of OECD countries in recent years in the context of slow growth and lagging productivity performance. Pressures on fiscal budgets in the aftermath of the financial crisis have also motivated governments to seek ways to boost innovation without necessarily engaging in new program spending, primarily to meet social demands in areas such as health, energy or the environment. This book examines dynamics between demand and innovation and provides insights into the rationale and scope for public policies to foster demand for innovation. The experience of first Japan and now Europe and the USA suggests that Hansen's concept of secular stagnation is highly relevant. Recovery has been anemic and follows a generation of financially unsustainable and often lackluster growth. Investment demand has declined while the supply of saving has increased, leaving the economy vulnerable to liquidity traps. Although some US indicators have improved, forward real rates have declined sharply, European prospects remain muddled, and the zero-bound will likely constrain again during the next recession. Infrastructure and private investment are the best ways to both minimize the risk of secular stagnation and raise demand.

Der Beitrag gibt einen kurzen Überblick zur Einbindung von Maschinen in die Energieflexibilität von Unternehmen, also der Fähigkeit, sich schnell und prozesseffizient an den Energiemarkt anzupassen. Im Fokus steht der "Smart Konnektor", wie er im Kopernikus-Projekt "SynErgie" entwickelt und eingesetzt wird. Er stellt die direkte Verbindung zu den Anlagen her und setzt Steuersignale um. Darüber hinaus berechnet er erste Kennzahlen und bietet Möglichkeiten zur Erfolgskontrolle und Fehleranalyse.

Die Entscheidung für ein von volatilen Erzeugungsquellen dominiertes Stromsystem stellt an die Stabilisierung des Systems neue Anforderungen. Zugleich bieten sich neue Optionen. Die bisherige Asymmetrie, nach der für die Stabilisierung die Kraftwerksseite verantwortlich sei, ist überkommene Praxis, deswegen auch heute habituell naheliegend, aber vermutlich nicht länger effizient. Die im Titel genannten nachfrageseitigen Ausgleichsoptionen (SE & DSM) bieten sich an. Im Beitrag wird deren Potential abgeschätzt. In vier Gestaltungsfeldern wird zudem gefragt, ob die bislang von der Politik gegebenen rechtlichen Mandate konsequent SE & DSM als Option berücksichtigen. Das Ergebnis ist viermal (weitgehende) Fehlanzeige. ; In Germany, the electricity system is evolving to be dominated by feed-ins from volatile renewable sources. The challenge implied is to buffer these fluctuations with the aim to stabilise the system-a task we are used to see carried out in the past by conventional power plants almost exclusively. Now, new options, at consumer side, are to come into play. Neglecting those options cannot be efficient. The title of the contribution draws attention to efficiency in electricity consumption (SE) as well as to demand side management (DSM). The potential contribution by both options is estimated. Furthermore, in four areas it is checked, to what extent the mandates in respective legal provisions introduced in the last five years do include the SE&DSM options appropriately. The result is: (Almost) NIL.

Demand‐Side Management (DSM) improves load factors and energy efficiency and reduces emissions. DSM methods are understood in the United States, but using DSM in Poland poses problems related to constraints in the power sector and the economic environment. This paper discusses the reorganization of the Polish energy sector and Polish energy policy during in the transition since 1989 and discusses the obstacles to implementing DSM programs.
