; In this paper, we intend to accurately describe the facts that led to the discovery of the "Dama de Baza" on July 20, 1971, in the city of Baza, Granada, at the Cerro Cepero Iberian necropolis. Through my experience as a direct witness of this event, we will explain the excitement, discussions and controversy it raised in the area and across Spain, its impact in all national media, and the unavoidable comparisons made with the "Dama de Elche". We will also give details about the lawsuit for the property of the Dama between the owner of the land, the tenant and the Government of Spain, lawsuit that finally gave the legitimate proprierty of the "Dama de Baza" to the last, due to its great archaeological value.

The discovery of the Lady of Elche in the site of La Alcudia has turned 120 years the last 4 of August, 2017. The story about the find has come down to us by a contemporary protagonist at that time: the Ilicitan archivist Pedro Ibarra Ruiz. The return of the sculpture in 1941, motivated by a swap between the French government of marshal Pétain and Franco, triggered interest in the famous Iberian sculpture and its history. Alejandro Ramos Folqués, owner and excavator of the site of La Alcudia, presented the story of a new and unknown discoverer, which varied some parts of the original testimony of Pedro Ibarra. The updated analysis of graphic and documentary evidences, has allowed us to bring to light new hypotheses about the archaeological context in which the masterpiece of Iberian sculpture should have appeared. ; The wall around Elche played an important role in defense of the village and also served to separate the town itself from the surrounding countryside. ; Elche is a Spanish municipality by the Mediterranean coast with three cultural elements inscribed in three different lists of UNESCO categories: Elche's Palm Grove (2000), Misteri d'Elx (2001) and Museo Escolar de Pusol (2009). For the last two decades Elche has faced a profound process of deindustrialisation of the shoe-making industry, traditional motor of the local economy. To deal with thissocio-economic situation, the local government chose the tourism sector as sustainable development and the way to relieve the decline of the industrial and entrepreneurial fabric. After the patrimonialization of two of its most important hall marks (Palm Grove and Misteri) the Lady of Elche has been included to form an "identity triad", which is been used as the basis for acity-brand strategy that makes tourism one of the axes of development of the municipality. In contrast to this strategy of promoting the heritage toward the outside, during the last forty years the Museum of Pusol has enhanced toward the inside the traditional culture as a structural element of the society of the Camp d'Elx. Despite the recognition of UNESCO, this Museum is not considered as a resource in the package designed for attracting visitors. This paper applies the model of the meaningful mediation of tourist space to analyse the practices carried out by the municipality. Furthermore the article describe show this process influences– not with out reluctance or conflict—the production of a new framework for cultural identity among local residents.
