This book presents a novel approach to time series econometrics, which studies the behavior of nonlinear stochastic processes. This approach allows for an arbitrary dependence structure in the increments and provides a generalization with respect to the standard linear independent increments assumption of classical time series models. The book offers a solution to the problem of a general semiparametric approach, which is given by a concept called C-convolution (convolution of dependent variables), and the corresponding theory of convolution-based copulas. Intended for econometrics and statistics scholars with a special interest in time series analysis and copula functions (or other nonparametric approaches), the book is also useful for doctoral students with a basic knowledge of copula functions wanting to learn about the latest research developments in the field

El presente trabajo estudia la existencia de contagio financiero entre tasas de cambio de siete países, de diferentes regiones del mundo. Considera tasas de cambio bilaterales respecto al dólar de Estados Unidos, para Alemania, Brasil, Corea del Sur, Chile, Indonesia, Reino Unido y Sudáfrica. Se usan datos diarios obtenidos en Bloomberg, entre abril de 2006 y febrero de 2018. Se emplea una metodología de funciones cópula, que permiten describir la dependencia entre funciones de distribución univariadas de forma muy general. Los resultados muestran evidencia de contagio entre tasas de cambio durante periodos de apreciación de las monedas frente al dólar. Dicho contagio es mayor entre economías de una misma región (por ejemplo, entre Chile y Brasil, y entre Corea del Sur e Indonesia). Esto implica que, durante tiempos de apreciación cambiaria, los inversionistas internacionales deben usar estrategias de diversificación regional para reducir el riesgo cambiario de sus portafolios. Asimismo, en general el contagio es mayor para pares de monedas que incluyen o Alemania o el Reino Unido. ; We study exchange rate dependencies between seven countries from four different regions of the world. Our sample includes two developed countries, the United Kingdom and Germany (representing the Euro Area), two large emerging Asian economies, South Korea and Indonesia, two Latin American countries, Brazil and Chile, and South Africa. The currencies of all of these countries are actively traded in global forex markets and all of them are important for large international portfolio composition and rebalancing. We construct multivariate copula functions using a regular vine copula approach, allowing for very flexible dependency structures. We fi nd evidence of exchange rate contagion for our set of countries. However, important asymmetries are worth noting. First, contagion occurs only during periods of exchange rate appreciation of the different currencies with respect to the United States Dollar. We do not fi nd evidence of contagion for any pair of exchange rates during periods of currency depreciations. Second, contagion is more frequent in pairs of countries that include either the United Kingdom or Germany. In fact, the largest tail dependence coefficient corresponds to the pair composed by these two countries' exchange rates. Third, contagion occurs more within countries of a same region, for instance, between Brazil and Chile, and between Korea and Indonesia. This result shows that, in episodes of large currency appreciation, hedging strategies for global investors taking positions in large markets require regional diversi cation. ; Cuando se presentan periodos de apreciación cambiaria extrema entre distintas divisas frente al dólar, existe evidencia de que se da por 'contagio'. Por el contrario, cuando se da el fenómeno de depreciación extrema, dicho contagio no ocurre. Contagio, según la definición de Forbes y Rigobon (2002), es un término que se asocia a una situación en la cual los mercados (en este caso las tasas de cambio de distintos países) presentan un nivel de dependencia (asociación), significativamente más alta en momentos de estrés financiero que en tiempos normales. El Borrador de Economía No. 1047, titulado: 'Detectando contagio en mercados cambiarios usando funciones cópula', estudia las dependencias en tasas de cambio entre siete países de cuatro diferentes regiones del mundo. La muestra incluye dos países desarrollados: Reino Unido y Alemania (por la zona Euro); dos economías emergentes asiáticas: Corea del Sur e Indonesia; dos países latinoamericanos: Brasil y Chile, y Sudáfrica. Las divisas de estos países se cotizan activamente en el mercado global, todas ellas son importantes para la composición y rebalanceo del portafolio internacional. Esta investigación estableció que dicho contagio es mayor entre economías de una misma región (por ejemplo, entre Chile y Brasil, y entre Corea del Sur e Indonesia). Asimismo, en general el contagio es mayor para pares de monedas que incluyen o Alemania o el Reino Unido. La metodología de funciones copula permite describir la dependencia entre funciones de distribución univariadas de forma muy general. Estas funciones ofrecen la posibilidad de medir las correlaciones entre activos financieros, diferenciando entre el cuerpo de la distribución y las colas izquierda y derecha de la misma. Según la investigación, el coeficiente de cola más alto corresponde a Reino Unido y Alemania. En tercer lugar, el contagio es más frecuente dentro de países de la misma región, por ejemplo, entre Brasil y Chile, y entre Corea e Indonesia. "Este resultado muestra que, en episodios de grandes apreciaciones, las estrategias de cobertura para inversionistas globales con posiciones en grandes mercados requieren diversificación regional para reducir el riesgo cambiario de sus portafolios", resaltan los investigadores, quienes tuvieron en cuenta datos diarios obtenidos en Bloomberg, entre abril de 2006 y febrero de 2018. Contrario a la evidencia encontrada para apreciaciones, no se evidencia señal de contagio en momentos de depreciación. Esto puede obedecer a las intervenciones cambiarias de bancos centrales, que son más frecuentes en momentos de apreciación, posiblemente por el miedo a dicha apreciación, identificado por Levy-Yeyati (2013).

Copula models are becoming increasingly popular in engineering and financial applications. They provide a flexible way of constructing joint distributions with arbitrary one-dimensional margins and a wide variety of dependence structures. This paper studies different types of conditionalization of copula-based models. We conditionalize these models in the usual way on point values but also propose a different type of conditionalization on a new margin. This new type of conditionalization is motivated by experience with a model built for application in modeling risk in civil aviation. Changing one margin in a copula model is very easy; however, it is not equivalent to conditionalizing on a new margin. For this purpose, the technique presented by Holland and Wang [Holland PW, Wang YJ (1987) Dependence function for continuous bivariate densities. Commun. Statist. Theory Methods 16(3):867–876], called marginal replacement, is used. The main result of this paper allows a simplified way of conditionalizing on more than one univariate margin in a normal copula model.

Since the pioneering work of Embrechts and co-authors in 1999, copula models have enjoyed steadily increasing popularity in finance. Whereas copulas are well-studied in the bivariate case, the higher-dimensional case still offers several open issues and it is far from clear how to construct copulas which sufficiently capture the characteristics of financial returns. For this reason, elliptical copulas (i.e. Gaussian and Student-t copula) still dominate both empirical and practical applications. On the other hand, several attractive construction schemes have appeared in the recent literature promising flexible but still manageable dependence models. The aim of this work is to empirically investigate whether these models are really capable of outperforming its benchmark, i.e. the Student-t copula and, in addition, to compare the fit of these different copula classes among themselves.

AbstractWe characterize absolutely continuous symmetric copulas with square integrable densities in this paper. This characterization is used to create new copula families, that are perturbations of the independence copula. The full study of mixing properties of Markov chains generated by these copula families is conducted. An extension that includes the Farlie–Gumbel–Morgenstern family of copulas is proposed. We propose some examples of copulas that generate non-mixing Markov chains, but whose convex combinations generate $$\psi $$
