Since 2016, The Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Central Africa (CIALCA) has been conducting research, generating information and scientific and practical knowledge about different parts of the agricultural sectors in Burundi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda and to a lesser extent in Uganda and Tanzania. In addition, due to its continuity and intensive capacity development efforts, the knowledge and the science generated by CIALCA has been spreading for more than a decade and currently being utilized by many researchers working in the Great Lakes Region.

This book addresses issues related to intensification of banana-based cropping systems in the (sub)humid highland areas of Africa. The information that is presented in the 28 chapters of the book is based on research carried out in the Great Lakes Region by CIALCA (Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Central Africa) and partners, and is arranged in six sections: banana germplasm (part 1), innovative seed systems (part 2), pests and diseases (part 3), cropping systems (part 4), postharvest use and nutrition (part 5), and technology adoption and dissemination of knowledge (part 6). This book provides a valuable resource for researchers, development actors, students and policy makers in agricultural systems and economics and in international development. It highlights and addresses key challenges and opportunities that exist in maintaining and improving the vital buffer function that bananas provide in the agricultural systems of the humid highlands of sub-Saharan Africa.

Low crop productivity, food insecurity, hunger and malnutrition; inadequate farming knowledge and skills, implements and inputs are characteristic of smallholder agriculture in Southern Africa. Many researchers argue that conservation agriculture can guarantee higher crop productivity, food security, improved livelihoods and environmental protection, better than the unsustainable traditional systems of slash and burn practices. In this paper, we present the results of a meta-analysis of over 40 academic publications to review conservation agriculture s role in influencing desired livelihood outcomes in Southern Africa. We conclude that the effectiveness of conservation agriculture towards better livelihood outcomes in Southern Africa remains debatable, especially when supportive government policies are lacking. ; Peer-reviewed

The objective of this report is to provide a review of and recommendations for improving the agriculture and food security risk financing framework in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Member States. This report presents the compilation of various analyses and activities realized in the context of a World Bank Group Advisory Services program to the SADC Region during 2019 and 2020, which included: (i) a stocktaking of the agroclimatic information systems of the region; (ii) the implementation of four innovation challenges to identify the most promising solutions to advance the risk finance agenda for food security and agriculture in the region; (iii) the implementation of one of the innovative solutions to one SADC Member State (the Democratic Republic of Congo); and (iv) the development of a regional risk financing policy note for agriculture and food security in SADC.
