The European Union (EU) promotes collaboration across functions and borders in its funded innovation projects, which are seen as complex collaboration to co-create knowledge. This requires the engagement of multiple stakeholders throughout the duration of the project. To probe complexity in EU-funded innovation projects the research question is: How does complexity affect the co-creation of knowledge in innovation projects, according to project participants? The data for this study was collected from project experts in the form of short narratives, using a questionnaire based on the elements of complexity of Mitleton-Kelly (2003). The results indicate that complexity characterises the co-creation of knowledge in innovation projects in various ways. Most emphasis was put on the elements Self-organisation, Connectivity and interdependence, Co-evolution, and Creation of new order. Thus, although this study demonstrates that the elements of complexity can be used to gain insight into innovation projects, the results show that not all elements of complexity are equally important in this context and that they appear in a certain order. Moreover, understanding the complexity of collaboration for innovation in relation to the input-throughput-output model of organisational communication is a contribution to theory that may help future projects achieve faster innovation.

Technology assessment (TA) frequently uses forward-looking methods to anticipate socio-technical changes and their corresponding implications to deduce advice for policy and society. In recent years, participatory methods have increasingly been applied to identify the expectations of society towards future technologies. In this context, several TA projects have developed, applied and adapted a participatory foresight method to engage citizens as well as other actor groups into co-generating advice for research and innovation agenda setting in a standardized process; namely, the multi-perspective and multi-step CIVISTI method (Citizens' Visions on Science, Technology and Innovation). Over the course of the past ten years, about 560 lay citizens without specialised knowledge on technology and innovation and 610 experts and stakeholders have taken part in these processes of co-generation of knowledge. In this contribution, we use our experience with this method and elaborate some criteria for the evaluation of knowledge co-generation and mutual learning in participatory foresight processes within TA.

Technikfolgenabschätzung (TA) verwendet häufig vorausschauende Methoden, um sozio-technische Entwicklungen und deren Auswirkungen zu antizipieren und daraus Empfehlungen für Politik und Gesellschaft abzuleiten. In den letzten Jahren wurden zunehmend partizipative Methoden eingesetzt, um die Erwartungen der Gesellschaft bezüglich Zukunftstechnologien zu identifizieren. In diesem Zusammenhang haben mehrere TA‑Projekte eine partizipative Foresight-Methode entwickelt, angewandt und angepasst, um Bürgerinnen und Bürger sowie andere Akteursgruppen über einen standardisierten Prozess in die Mitgestaltung von Forschungs- und Innovationsagenden einzubeziehen: die multiperspektivische und mehrstufige CIVISTI-Methode (Citizens' Visions on Science, Technology and Innovation). Im Laufe der letzten zehn Jahre haben etwa 560 Laien ohne spezielle Kenntnisse über Technologie und Innovation und 610 Fachleute an diesen Prozessen der Wissens- ko-generierung teilgenommen. This article describes the process and outcomes of a participatory video project with 22 catadore/as (' recyclers') from recycling cooperatives in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil. During a week-long workshop (April 2008), leaders from participating cooperatives were trained in video technology, storyboard development, and postproduction media as a strategy to improve community–networking opportunities and to stimulate awareness and education of inclusive and integrated recycling programs. Through a participatory action research initiative, four short documentaries were then co-produced between 2009 and 2011 and a collaborative research design was developed to use the videos as a communication tool for enhancing dialogue with policy makers in three municipalities. This article explores the methodological and theoretical contributions of using participatory video as a strategy for mobilizing community knowledge. This research demonstrates the use of participatory video as a creative avenue to capture and nurture valuable knowledge often on the periphery, which can have powerful impacts when brought into centre stage. It also reviews theories of Community-based Participatory Action Research and Knowledge Democracy as central to expanding processes for participatory development and citizenship. The results reveal enhanced mobilization of this community and document the strengthening of partnerships between recycling cooperatives and municipal governments in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.

Nacionālajos un pasaules mēroga politikas dokumentos ir uzsvērta vajadzība uzlabot sadarbību starp daudzām pusēm dažādos līmeņos, lai panāktu labākus problēmu risinājumus. Būtiska loma šajā jomā ir zināšanu kopradei [co-creation angl.] starp sabiedrības locekļiem. Šajā kontekstā ir pieejami dažādi instrumenti iedzīvotāju integrācijai lēmumu pieņemšanas procesā. Šajā pētījumā tiek aplūkota sabiedriskās zinātnes un etnobotānikas loma zināšanu koprades procesā kā atbalsta instrumentam ilgtspējīgas attīstības mērķu (IAM) īstenošanā. Promocijas darbā ir apvienoti autores zinātniskie pētījumi etnobotānikas un sabiedriskās zinātnes jomā. Literatūras pārskata un autores pētījumu kopums izskaidro atšķirības starp sabiedrisko zinātni un etnobotāniku, – procesiem, no kuriem vienā ir iesaistīti sabiedrības locekļi, lai sniegtu situācijas apkopojumu, bet otrajā tiek apkopotas zināšanas, kas pārveidojas, paaudzēm mainoties. Balstoties uz pētījuma rezultātiem, autore aizstāv zināšanu kopradi kopā ar sabiedrību un sabiedrības labā, izmantojot sabiedriskās zinātnes un etnobotānikas līdzekļus, un uzskaita konkrētus IAM un apakšmērķus gadījumos, kad abas pieejas var tikt tieši piemērotas Latvijas situācijai. Knowledge co-creation with the public members are a crucial element in this matter. On this note, diversity of tools exists for integrating people in the decision-making process. For this study, citizen science and ethnobotany are explored regarding the knowledge co-creation process as part of supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research findings are combined from the author's ethnobotanical and citizen science studies. The combination of literature review and the results of the author's studies explains the difference between citizen science and ethnobotany, where one involves public members to provide a snap-shot of the situation, whereas the latter is a knowledge transformed throughout the generations. Based on the study results, the author advocates for knowledge co-creation with and for the public through the means of citizen science and ethnobotany and lists specific SDGs and targets where both approaches may be directly applied with the focus on Latvia. Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the propensity for innovation and co-creation in service companies in receipt of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) type services through their intensive incorporation of knowledge.


Design/methodology/approach
In order to achieve this study objective, the authors first carried out a literature review in order to specify the scope of the construct; second, the authors applied a survey based on the "Spinner model"; third, the authors undertook research on KIBS clients and restricted the results to this population sample; and fourth, based on the validated and applied models deriving from the base construct, the authors presented the results obtained.


Findings
This concludes that the "Spinner" model is valid for explaining the propensity for innovation and co-creation in companies receiving KIBS. The results demonstrate evidence of innovation processes as a result of the intensive application of knowledge associated with co-creation and knowledge transfers.


Research limitations/implications
This provides managers with a better understanding of the barriers that may obstruct the implementation of co-creation and knowledge transfers. Hence, the variables analysed may guide managers in defining and planning innovation strategies. Furthermore, this enables each company receiving such services to validate them and establish indices for the innovation propensity of specialist (knowledge intensive) service providers within the framework of benchmarking exercises.


Originality/value
This study sets out a new means of analysing the propensity for innovation and the co-creation of knowledge by companies making recourse to knowledge intensive services. From the theoretical point of view, this defines a new construct and a means of classification for companies supplying services designed for their propensity for innovation and co-creation. From the practical perspective, this study provides the companies subject to research with the opportunity to perceive their respective position in relation to other companies. In addition to this, ranking companies in such a way may drive the need to develop new knowledge for future co-creation and innovation processes.

In the UK, Business Schools are being exhorted by government to engage with local organizations to enhance their competitiveness. However, a historical legacy of providing courses for international students and a research focus upon multi-national firms has constrained the capability of most business schools to contribute in this way. We highlight global examples of business schools recognising the opportunity to develop locally useful knowledge and enhance the capabilities of their students to deploy that knowledge. Business Schools are seen to significantly reposition their offer by developing the leadership skills of local organizations and enhancing the entrepreneurial and problem solving skills of their students for local deployment. We conclude that a sustained emphasis upon faculty and student engagement with local organisations can allow business schools to overcome legacy constraints and thereby contribute more fully to local economic competitiveness for mutual benefit.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China leverage their strengths to engage stakeholders in knowledge co-creation processes and get mutual benefit via knowledge-based view (KBV).


Design/methodology/approach
Based on KBV, the authors conduct a multiple-case study of five SMEs in China to embrace the knowledge co-creation practice using semi-structured interview, organizational documents and onsite observation.


Findings
This study highlights how SMEs leverage their strengths to engage stakeholder to co-create knowledge and practice for the better capturing and utilization of external and internal knowledge. The authors identify three processes of knowledge co-creation for SMEs based on knowledge sharing, knowledge integration and knowledge application in the B2B context. This study finds that SMEs engage their stakeholders in knowledge sharing by building and maintaining trust. The knowledge integration process was driven by the owner's openness. Mutual learning facilitates the knowledge application process of SMEs.


Research limitations/implications
This study relies on a limited number of case studies and considers only firms' perspective to analyze the SMEs co-create knowledge with their stakeholders. Further studies could examine the challenge of knowledge co-creation in multiple stakeholders' relationships in B2B contexts, i.e. in relation to product and service innovation with complexity and uncertainly.


Practical implications
Managers need to make choices when designing knowledge co-creation process in collaborative product development activities. The use of online and offline approaches can help balance requirements in terms of joint problem-solving across firms, the efficiency of knowledge co-creation and effective of knowledge leakage.


Originality/value
The conceptualization of knowledge co-creation as knowledge sharing and knowledge integration and knowledge application extends existing perspective on knowledge co-creation as either a transfer of knowledge or as revealing the novel situation of pertinent knowledge with entirely assimilate it. The findings point to the complexity of knowledge co-creation as a process influenced by stakeholder engagement, perspectives on knowledge, trust of multiple stakeholders, openness of firm boundaries and mutual learning of SMEs with their stakeholders.
