The social state is a concept that aligns social rights of the citizens with their political and economic rights as a condition for the stability and development of society. That's why it was accepted by many countries. But it is pointed out as an obstacle to individual creativity and market freedom, slowing economic growth. Therefore this paper seeks to answer the question of whether and to what extent the social state in the new millennium can confirm its social usefulness. In a separate section, the paper will also address the functioning and development of the welfare state in the Republic of Macedonia. KEY WORDS: Social state, advantages, disadvantages

Examines conditions conducive to future terrorist activities & assesses recent incidents as warnings. The importance of considering the underlying motives of terrorists & the dangers of improved communications, particularly the Internet, are discussed. The decline of the moral authority of the US government, represented by poor voter turnout & decreasing respect for government, are described. The Oklahoma City & World Trade Center (New York City) bombings are analyzed as examples of challenges to this authority & the problems of an increasingly diverse & autonomous society. The threat of widespread poverty is seen in the takeover of the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima, Peru, by the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement. These incidents present a model for other discontented groups worldwide that can take advantage of modern communications. T. Arnold

This article analyses the commemoration of political violence and its victims in the aftermath of the Chilean dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1973—90). We assess the varied political processes involved in commemoration, and we identify those whose struggles to reclaim sites and spaces associated with past human rights violations represent a new political, and in some cases antipolitical, repertoire. We also examine shifts in official stances and action regarding human rights and political commemoration.

The Social Security program is now 75 years old and debate and reform are in the air. Some decry that its benefits are inadequate and should be improved, especially for lifetime low earners, women and minorities. Others, more loudly, proclaim that the system is in financial difficulty and, if nothing is done, will soon go broke. As a result of the last major amendments enacted in 1983, Social Security trust funds now have reserves of $2.5 trillion, at least on paper. However, the trust funds are an accounting device. There is no real money there. It has been spent by the Treasury to fund other government programs and has served to mask a significant portion of the federal deficit for the past 25 years. The Social Security problem is really a federal fiscal problem. The U.S. Treasury owes the Social Security Administration a great deal of money, and the bill is about to become due. In 2010, for the first time in decades, Old Age, Survivor and Disability Insurance expenditures are greater than Federal Insurance Contribution Act tax revenue. This will soon become a permanent condition and a great deal of attention is being directed at solving the funding problem. This article, after examining the Old Age Survivor and Disability Insurance program's origins, development and current benefit structure, focuses on its funding arrangements. Saving Social Security will be relatively easy. Managing its impact on the federal budget will be daunting.
The resurgence of the discipline of Social Work at the University of Chile in 2014 is undoubtedly a milestone for the profession in our country. We could well say that it marks the end of the dictatorship for the discipline, since despite the years of "recovery of democracy in Chile" in the nineties, only fourteen years later the career was reopened in the emblematic state university. In this sense, this reopening symbolizes the end of a dark period for the discipline. With the advent of the dictatorial regime, the closure, imprisonment, exoneration and disappearance of students, academics and professionals of the university, together with the termination - by decree - of our life as a university profession, helped to exterminate social work.
