My dear Mr. Markham: I am forwarding you under separate cover a copy of "The Newer Justice" which is published by Ex-Judge McKenzie Cleland, who has practically given over this issue to the interest of the Anti Capital Punishment Society of America. It will undoubtedly interest you to know that we have made considerable progress, and that since the formation of this Society the agitation has evidently had its effect, as North and South Dakota have followed the progressive footsteps and abolished capital punishment. We now have three bills in the Illinois Legislature, and have impressed the Governor to such an extent that he has sent a special message to the Legislators advocating the abolishment of capital punishment.
