A new method for pest risk assessment and the identification and evaluation of risk-reducing options is currently under development by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Plant Health Panel. The draft method has been tested on pests of concern to the European Union (EU). The method is adaptable and can focus either on all the steps and sub-steps of the assessment process or on specific parts if necessary. It is based on assessing changes in pest population abundance as the major driver of the impact on cultivated plants and on the environment. Like other pest risk assessment systems the method asks questions about the likelihood and magnitude of factors that contribute to risk. Responses can be based on data or expert judgment. Crucially, the approach is quantitative, and it captures uncertainty through the provision by risk assessors of quantile estimates of the probability distributions for the assessed variables and parameters. The assessment is based on comparisons between different scenarios, and the method integrates risk-reducing options where they apply to a scenario, for example current regulation against a scenario where risk-reducing options are not applied. A strategy has been developed to communicate the results of the risk assessment in a clear, comparable and transparent way, with the aim of providing the requestor of the risk assessment with a useful answer to the question(s) posed to the EFSA Plant Health Panel. The method has been applied to four case studies, two fungi, Ceratocystis platani and Cryphonectria parasitica, the nematode Ditylenchus destructor and the Grapevine flavescence dorée phytoplasma. flora treatment for the Phyllanthaceae occurring in the DemocraticRepublic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi is provided. The present volumeincludes a key to all genera, and a full treatment of the following seven genera:Amanoa, Flueggea, Margaritaria, Meineckia, Pentabrachion, Phyllanthus,Pseudolachnostylis, Uapaca. In total, 77 species are included. The remainder ofthe Phyllanthaceae genera occurring in the Flora region were treated in previousvolumes of the Flora series, but an identification key to all genera is provided. Allspecies come with a full morphological description, protologue and type information,synonyms, data on their distribution, habitat, vernacular names and uses,as well as references to additional literature and the citation of representativeherbarium specimens. Eleven species, all within Phyllanthus, are endemic to thearea of the Flora. Fourty-seven botanical drawings as well as 10 photo plates areincluded. A flora treatment for the Amaryllidaceae subfam. Allioideae occurringin the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi is given. Thesubfamily comprises one genus and one species; in addition, one species foundnear the limits of the territory of the flora is included in the key. Background and aims – The genus Vitex is revised for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R. Congo), in order to prepare the treatment of the genus for the Flore d'Afrique Centrale. Methods – Herbarium taxonomy. All the relevant material kept in BM, BR, BRLU, COI, K, P, POZG, WAG has been examined, supplemented with recent field observations in S Katanga. Key results – A total of 21 taxa are reported for the study area, i.e. 17 species, 1 subspecies, 3 varieties. Two taxa are new to the D.R. Congo (V. ciliata, V. fischeri var. keniensis). Four taxa (3 species, 1 variety) are endemic to the D.R. Congo (Vitex agelaeifolia var. rufula, V. discoideoglandulosa, V. djumaensis, V. rubroaurantiaca). Two other taxa are subendemic, i.e. have most of their range in D.R. Congo (Vitex congolensis var. thomasii, V. cuspidata). Two new combinations are made (Vitex congolensis var. thomasii, V. fischeri var. keniensis). Nine new synonyms are proposed. Le Haut-Katanga, dans le sud de la République Démocratique du Congo, présente une flore riche et diversifiée. La végétation naturelle comprend différents types de forêts :forêt claire (« miombo »), forêt dense sèche (« muhulu »), galeries forestières (« mushitu »)… Le présent ouvrage propose, pour la première fois, un aperçu global de la flore ligneuse du Haut-Katanga. Il comprend des clés de détermination pour l'ensemble des espèces d'arbres et arbustes qui y sont connues (près de 700 espèces). 214 espèces sont décrites en détail et illustrées de photos originales en couleurs (silhouette, écorce, feuilles, fleurs, fruits). Leur écologie, leur distribution géographique et leurs usages sont précisés. L'ouvrage s'adresse autant aux naturalistes expérimentés, auquel il apportera des outils d'identification rigoureux, qu'aux amoureux de la nature, qu'il séduira par la beauté des illustrations. Comme d'autres régions d'Afrique, le Haut-Katanga est malheureusement soumis à une déforestation rapide. La mise en œuvre de politiques de conservation et de plans de gestion des ressources naturelles doit s'appuyer sur une connaissance approfondie de la flore, et passe par la sensibilisation du public. Background and aims – This work provides the first pattern analysis of the alien flora of the DemocraticRepublic of the Congo (D.R. Congo), using Asteraceae and Fabaceae as a case study.Methods – Based on herbarium collections, existing databases, and literature data, a database of 38 alienspecies of Asteraceae and 79 alien species of Fabaceae has been assembled. Patterns in the introductionpathway, phylogeny, life form, morpho-functional traits, geographic origin, and occurrence in D.R. Congoare explored.Key results – America is the main source continent in both families, but Asia is also an important donorof Fabaceae. Taxonomic spectrum discrepancies between the alien and the native flora reflect the continentof origin. Sixty-six percent of alien Asteraceae have been accidentally introduced, most of which beingannual weeds of disturbed soil. In contrast, 90% of alien Fabaceae have been deliberately introduced forforestry, agriculture, or environmental purposes, most of which being phanerophytes. Traits were comparedbetween pairs of congeneric alien and native species. For Asteraceae, a sharp discrepancy was found in thelife form spectrum (aliens: mostly therophytes; natives: phanerophytes). For Fabaceae, alien species hadlarger leaves and larger pods compared to their native congeners. The number of specimens in collectionswas positively correlated with the time since the date of first collection for both families. The Guineo-Congolian region has the highest number of alien Fabaceae, while alien Asteraceae are overrepresented inthe Zambezian region.Conclusions – Contrasting patterns between alien Asteraceae and Fabaceae in the flora of D.R. Congoin terms of life forms, trait divergence compared to the native flora, and occurrence, reflect the divergentbiological attributes and relations to humans of the two families. Key message: Wood density profiles revealed significant differences in wood formation along a precipitation gradient in the Congo Basin. The response of trees to climate change varies depending on leaf phenology properties. Abstract: Tropical forests face increasing pressures due to climate change and yet, the response of trees to varying climate conditions remains poorly understood. In the present study, we aim to fill some gaps by comparing the leaf phenology and the pith-to-bark wood anatomical variability of 13 common tree species of the Democratic Republic of Congo among three sites presenting contrasted rainfall regimes. We measured pith-to-bark density profiles on which we applied wavelet analyses to extract three descriptors, which we further used as proxies to describe and compare wood anatomical variability. They describe the growth periodicity, regularity and the amplitude of variations of the anatomical patterns. Our results show that evergreen species tend to have significantly higher anatomical variability where rainfall seasonality is more pronounced. Deciduous species, in spite of shedding leaves for longer periods in drier sites, did not show significant differences in their anatomical variability. The analyses of density profiles and phenology records suggest that the seasonality of precipitation influences both leaf phenology and cambial activity. The high intra-site variability in phenology and anatomy suggests that site-related micro-climate conditions also influence cambial activity. ; SCOPUS: ar.j ; info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Description of the subject. Several ethnobotanical studies have demonstrated links between traditional medicine practices and the ethnicity and geographical location of healers, while many others have concluded the opposite. This study deals with the typology of traditional healers in the mountain region of Kahuzi-Biega. Objectives. The goal is to understand whether the typology of traditional healers is related to their inter-ethnic and inter-zonal differences, based on diseases treated and plants used. Method. Ethnobotanical surveys were conducted using the "PSSVV" method. This involved 88 traditional healers recognized as "specialists" in 33 villages adjacent to the forest of Kahuzi-Biega, in DR Congo. Multivariate analysis (clustering, ordination, Mantel test, IndVal) were applied to establish typologies of traditional healers. Results. Multivariate analyses showed that ethnicity and geographical location did not explain the practices and knowledge of healers. However, by using the IndVal method, differences were observed in their degree of specialization. Non-specialized healers (70%) could be distinguished from specialized healers (30%). Two clear groups of specialists emerged; those who treat bone trauma and those who treat obstetric-gynecological complaints. The Mantel correlation test revealed a positive association (r = 0.134, p < 0.05) between the "healers-plants" and "healers-diseases" matrices. This indicates that healers who treat similar diseases use similar herbs. Both typologies have shown their preferences for forest species (81%), especially trees (51%). Conclusions. This exploratory study suggests that traditional healers are characterized based on their specializations. Abstract. A flora treatment for the Anthericaceae occurring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi is given. The family comprises only one genus in the area of the Flora: Chlorophytum. A total of 52 species, among which 3 imperfectly known ones, as well as 4 subspecies, 24 varieties and 1 form are treated. User-friendly keys to all taxa are included. Four taxa are endemic to the area, and many others appear to be rare. All species come with a full description, synonyms, data on their distribution, habitat, vernacular names and uses, as well as references to additional literature and the citation of representative specimens used. Twenty-one taxa are illustrated with colour photographs, twenty-eight by line-drawings. Upper-Katanga, especially the region around Lubumbashi, is a hotspot for the genus, with many taxa threatened by deforestation and urbanisation. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Cette littérature militante comporte une évocation de la ville mosane et des bouleversements urbanistiques contemporains à laquelle l'amateur pourra trouver le charme des photographies d'autrefois. International audience ; ZusammenfassungDurch die Nutzung der Sonnenenergie sind Pflanzen die Grundlage des Lebens (Ernährung) auf der Erde. Jedoch wurden Pflanzen im Vergleich zur Tierwelt lange als weniger gelungen und weniger Interessenswürdig angesehen. Innerhalb von multidisziplinärem Wissen (Biologie, Chemie, Physik, Ökologie…) liegt das Studium der Pflanzen als Grundlage einer botanischen Kultur an der Kreuzung politischer, wirtschaftlicher, sozialer und bildungspolitischer Fragen. Vor diesem allgemeinen Hintergrund eines Mangels an Interesse und Unsichtbarkeit der Pflanzen als Lebewesen von Ökosystemen, stellt sich in diesem Artikel die Frage, wie eine Lehre der Pflanzen gestaltet werden soll, die auf die Herausforderungen des 21.
