'State feminism' is a concept that refers to the integration of feminists and feminist issues into the state apparatus. Yet, while the feminist movement must regularly contend with an antifeminist counter-movement, it is worth considering whether a 'state antifeminism' is also present or emerging, and how this presence or emergence is affecting efforts by feminist organizations to address the needs of women and advance women's equality. With this objective in mind, this article focuses chiefly on two Western countries and is based on more than twenty semi-structured interviews with feminists in Belgium and Quebec, Canada.

Argues that the antiabortion movement has a significance well beyond the campaign to abolish legal abortion itself; it acts as a powerful catalyst for a number of right-wing causes, including explicit antifeminist mobilisation. Explores some of the current political meanings of abortion in order to illuminate the ways in which abortion has come to serve as a 'condensation symbol' for contemporary opposition to feminism. Ziel ist die Annäherung an Subjektivierungspotenziale, die mit der Kategorie Geschlecht interferierenden Diskursen inhärent sind. Dafür galt es zunächst jedoch die Frage aufzuwerfen, von welchen "Feminismen" und "Antifeminismen" auf der Ebene des Alltags überhaupt die Rede sein kann.

Antifeminists have developed a legitimation theory that justifies, informs, & supports their politics. Where early US conservatives opposed consent theory because it justified political equality, contemporary antifeminists have adapted it to articulate different rights & responsibilities for women & men. A tracing of the history of consent theory in sexual politics suggests that the social contract philosophers & the founding fathers systematically excluded women from consent. Early US feminists adopted consent theory to legitimize political equality, but discovered that political equality stopped short of sexual equality. The innovation of the antifeminists of the present is their use of consent theory to justify the political inclusion of women as a basis for legitimizing their social subordination. Modified HA.

In the last decade, Rousseau's views on the nature and social roles of the sexes have attracted considerable attention. Looks at Rousseau's views on sex differences in strength, mental abilities, reproductive capacities and interests. Argues that Rousseau does not believe natural differences are necessariy either very great, inevitable, immutable or politically relevant. Rousseau, however, finds sex roles to have beneficial social consequences, and, therefore, he strongly endorses differential treatment of the sexes. (AM)
