The All-Day Neighborhood Schools of the New York City Board of Education is a significant project. These are elementary schools in which additional staff are provided to help children during the schoolday and in an after school "club program" from three to five. The warm, personal rela tionship between teachers and children fuses home, school, and community into a sympathetic unit. Children of working pa rents who might otherwise be unsupervised in the empty after- school hours before the mother returns to the home, children needing help in learning processes, children with language and integration problems benefit from the program. Statistics show that there is a conspicuous lack of truancy and a mini mum of vandalism in these schools and that the delinquency rate declines.

This qualitative study assessed overall parent and teacher satisfaction with Direct Instruction reading for students having low incidence disabilities at an approved, private-licensed school for exceptional children in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Results of four parent and four teacher interviews coupled with document analysis disclosed inadequate teacher training in Direct Instruction methodologies, an incomplete understanding of Direct Instruction on the part of the parents interviewed, and high rates of teacher and parent satisfaction with Direct Instruction methodology for teaching reading. Secondary findings included teacher infidelity to the Direct Instruction methodology and inadequate communication concerning reading instruction between school and parents. Recommendations for enhancing the teachers' and parents' experience of Direct Instruction are offered based upon the findings.

(Autorenreferat)

This article studies how the distribution of the work of punkah-pulling in European households and barracks of colonial India involved European masters making gradually multiplying claims on their servants' labouring time and how these claims fared in practice. The laborious task of punkah-pulling in such establishments was often resisted by native servants on counts of caste, custom or simply exhaustion. In the context of such conflicts, this article tries to understand how the colonial state and its legal and regulatory functions mediated the contested terrain of domestic and service work over the nineteenth century. Over the latter half of this century, punkah-pulling became a separate occupation, even as this occupation slid down the hierarchy of service work and became a more pronounced target of recurring racial violence. Against this background, the article also tries to grapple with the material limits encountered by the regimes of work involved in the cheap, day-and-night conduct of punkah-pulling that eventually led up to the acceptance of mechanised alternatives.
