[English]: "Voice to the voiceless" has been the slogan introducing the launch of Al Jazeera English. Like its Arabic sister channel, Al Jazeera English is funded by the Emirate of Qatar. Its mission is to offer a perspective of Middle Eastern affairs to a wide international audience, this time in the language of globalisation. In a post-9/11 era marked by military and identity conflicts, Al Jazeera English has had the merit to introduce a new model of television news that is "conciliatory", far from the polarised and hyperbolic ones, and at the same time de-centralised, shifting the focus to a 'South' defined in opposition to the culturally and politically hegemonic 'North'. This book explores how the channel adopts and yet reshapes the Anglo-American news standards; the contradictions between the channel's democratising push, as in the 2011 uprisings, and its funding state's conservatory policies; between universal aspirations and the new regional boundaries characterising the transnational news domain. These issues are all investigated analysing the channel's content, with a perspective that aims at enriching the traditional news media studies approach with views from postcolonial theory and cultural studies.

Suffering Up Close: The Strategic Construction of Mediated Suffering on Al Jazeera English
With national Western media as a point of departure, the literature on distant suffering emphasizes the geographical, cultural, and editorial distance between Western media professionals and viewers, and between both of those groups and the stories of suffering in the rest of the world. Through examples from the Qatari satellite channel Al Jazeera English, this article argues that mediated suffering can also be understood as something close to us. The channel literally goes closer and zooms in, exposes, personalizes, and authorizes the experience of suffering in conflicts and disasters. This construction of mediated closeness is suited to engendering strong feelings of compassion in media audiences, but it also serves to raise new ethical dilemmas in political argument and institutional strategy.

Al-Jazeera English and global news networks: clash of civilizations or cross-cultural dialogue?
In: Media, war & conflict, Band 2, Heft 3, S. 263-284
ISSN: 1750-6360
This article examines the role of the global news media in either furthering the balkanization of the global news environment or moving towards a globally connected and engaged aggregation of publics. Drawing on the results of a six-country study of media viewing habits, cultural, political and cognitive dispositions of viewers of Al-Jazeera English in comparison to viewers of CNN International and BBC World, the authors outline two findings: (1) viewers worldwide turn to particular broadcasters to affirm rather than inform their opinions, meaning the global news media are likely to reinforce existing attitudes and stereotypes of cultural 'others'; and (2) the longer viewers have been watching Al-Jazeera English, the less dogmatic they are in their thinking and thus more open to considering alternative and clashing opinions. The authors conclude by arguing that, when media jettison the principles embodied in 'war journalism', broadcasters can indeed have a latent yet substantial impact on fostering cross-cultural understanding and reconciliation.
